I think it just flew over the heads of most kids. I remember thinking K.Rool was nuts. First he's this crocodile wearing a cape and a crown, then a pirate, then a mad scientists. He was especially creepy in DKC3. They way he flew around, pretending to be a bird was really unsettling.
