It was the first game in the series. No one was expecting it's release. Yoshida thought it was shit. Everyone who saw it at E3 thought it was shit. Game sites only offered passing mention. It became popular through word of mouth alone.
If anything, it was terribly under-rated for a pretty long while. A game also can't be over-rated in retrospect, otherwise you could say this about just about any classic, it was pretty good for it's time and nothing will change that.

I liked it, but it got really, really repetitive very quickly. 90% of the quests were just go get the quest from quest giver at point A, go to point B and collect a item(s) or kill some stuff, then return to point A for your reward. Exploration was kind of fun but there really wasn't any loot worth finding and the constantly respawning enemies/bosses made exploring a serious chore. The hack-and-slash RPG combat was pretty cool and very original but got boring real fast, as all the fights either consisted of a horde of weak enemies or one boss kind of enemy with a few weak enemies backing him up. The companion AI is incredibly stupid, and with no commands (besides very simple come my way or help me) or preset behaviors to give them like in, say, Dragon Age Origins or Final Fantasy 12, they'll often end up getting themselves killed or doing something stupid. It's especially annoying when you're trying to fight a monster that's weak to magic attacks, but your one mage keeps healing/giving buffs to the party instead of fighting the monster, or when you need your archer to knock you out of a monsters grip but he instead starts whacking at his feet to knock him down.
All in all, I had a lot of fun with it, but it's not nearly the masterpiece /v/ makes it out to be. It's a good game with a lot of flaws, that's for sure.

How similar is Baldur to Pillars? I played BGII but didn't like the magic system at all or the DnD hit system which is even awful in the actual tabletop game.

Not that anon but the bosses in demons souls actually had some kind of gimmick behind them which offered for multiple counter strategies more often than not.
The "counter strategy" for every boss in dark souls 1 is: hit them hard and dodge their attacks. Not saying it was a bad game, I enjoyed them both, but Demon's Souls' bosses were great for its time.
