Hey /v/, what old-school JRPGs have you been playing lately? If you haven't, why not?

I started playing Phantasy Star I-IV recently and it's been great fun so far. Was the original series forgotten about, or did it never really take off? Is there any chance of PS III and IV getting remakes like I and II did? It seems PSO is the only thing Phantasy Star-related that Sega is interested in publishing these days.
Also, Alis is adorable.

Played the shit out of 2 and 3 growing up. Never got to play 1 or 4 until I got into emulation and actually had an itch recently to go back and play through them all, except I waited too long, got invested in other games.

>PSO is the only PS related thing
Which I don't mind so much, just wish we would have gotten PSO2 and Nova in the west, the Portable series was great, high recommend playing them if you hadn't and enjoyed PSO.

Also Phantasy Star 0 is underrated.

this might do a lot better on /vr/

Dunno if it counts as old school but I am looking to play Vagrant Story and Breath of Fire 3 when I get a chance.
>>
Been playing Wild Arms 1, the translation is a bit wonky but it's a pretty solid game. And the writing manages to shine through regardless of goofy engrish like "Ray Lines" instead of Ley Lines

I had the phantasy star collection on gba and enjoyed it quite a bit back in the day. I do remember it getting pretty difficult though.
>>
So riddle me this, /v/:
>PS III Non-combat: Much more detailed environments, character animations are extremely fluid (probably even moreso than in IV) and generally looks great
>PS III combat: Looks barely improved from PS I (which was a Master System game, for fuck's sake), some aspects are arguably worse (barebones and lacklustre attack animation and environments)
What the fuck happened? Did they misjudge the Genesis' graphical capacity or what?

I've been playing PSO2 and Nova, they're nice but fundamentally different types of games from the original series. I wish I could get Alis' costume in PSO2, god knows why you can get Valkyria character costumes but not classic Phantasy Star ones.
>>
>>321770730
Yeah, everything after PSO kinda changed PS completely. I'd not be against a more traditional PS RPG, but I doubt they'll take that avenue with how well the PSO-line games have been doing for them.

>No PSPi2 HD

Why even fucking live?

Lunar games on PS1. They sure seem different from the originals, although that could be my memory fucking up. Easier somehow.

They've only recently began cashing in on PSO costumes, so I assume Nei and Rika are further in. Don't know if we'll ever get Alis fanservice, with the amount of attention she's been getting in the past 15 or so years. PSO2 is expected to last 10 years, though, so maybe they'll eventually run out of things to reference. For now, enjoy this throwback to the classic that started it all.
>>
>>321771375
The "Complete" games are different than the Sega CD ones. They also went and did remakes on PSP, completely changed the translation and new VAs.

Stay the fuck away from Dragon Song on DS

>Don't know if we'll ever get Alis fanservice, with the amount of attention she's been getting in the past 15 or so years
At least there was Generation 1. The saddest part is the most attention she'll be likely to get these days is from SJW twats who want to use her as 'first female RPG protagonist, so progressive for it's time, etc.' Not that it'd make any difference to Sega.

I've been meaning to start playing old jrpgs again. I wanted to try and translate one, but I'd also need to find a way to extract the text, or get someone to do it for me. Any good untranslated games?
>>
>>321771756
I've been playing Harmony, it's been really nice so far. I just wish I could get my head around the party members battle positions.
>Place Luna in the back row
>She runs forwards to use her ranged attack
>Place her in the front row
>She rotates between running back and running forward right next to the enemy to attack
I really don't get it.
>>
>>321772527
SMT If. Please, someone has to do it. I'll even help, if you want, I've done some professional games translation before.
>>
>>321771756
So if I was wanting to try the Lunar games for the first time sometime, would the remakes be the way to go? Or is it best to try the originals first then the remakes?
>>
>>321772910
Personally, I'd go with the Complete versions of Lunar 1 and 2 on PS1, but that is personal bias.

>>321772705
I didn't play Harmony, so I don't know what to tell you. I started it up, realized it was just a remake, had nostalgia for the original translation/VAs, so I put it down. It is graphically better though.
>>
>>321773112
So the original and PSX version didn't have battle positions? What a weird thing to throw into the remake. Oh well, I guess I'll figure it out eventually.
>>
>>321769135
I'm praying for a PS2 or PS4 3d remaster on the 3ds by m2

Shit would look so cash
>>
>>321773209
No, it did, but from what I can recall they still moved into a position near/close to enemies to attack. I'm just not sure if there was some change in harmony that was suppose to make them fixed to a position.
>>
>>321773451
No, they still move around during battle, it's just that in pre-battle menu you can pick your characters starting positions in battle. The thing is I found that characters moving in certain direction or over certain differences can't attack enemies in the same go, but it doesn't seem very consistent.
>>
>>321773864
Yeah, sounds exactly like how it is in the originals/complete games. There's like a set number of steps before a turn ends for them.
>>
>>321773112
Ok cool thanks, so there's no extra content or anything in the PSP versions?
>>
>>321774485
Aside from graphics and some QoL changes, I don't think any new/additional content was added. I know that others I've talked to have said it's a lot easier than the originals/complete versions because of the QoL changes.

On the subject of shit I need to play, this. Especially after finding out that the JP version of the PSP port was censored, while the GBA release remained the most lewd.

That's what I thought. So it's a bit like a tactical RPG, but without telling you how far you can travel? That's a bit annoying, but never mind.

>>321776193
Right I forgot to mention.

The PSP version has something of a new prologue of sorts.

Is it just me or is Riviera massively overlooked for some reason?
>>
>>321777175
No, it's not just you. Someone mentioned it in a GBA rec thread a few days back and it totally hit me that I had overlooked it, despite being on the /v/ rec site as well.

That's when I learned about the censorship in the JP version of the PSP port, while the NA GBA game had everything intact.

>>321777175
Out of all the Dept. Heaven games it's probably the most overlooked despite it being well the first one.
