Tons of people were aware of him well before he began working on Undertale because he was the most popular musician working on Homestuck, which was an internet megahit itself.
Just about every single one of the most stand-out moments in Undertale is made by the music, as well. Hell, one of the most popular tracks in one of the most memed about scenes in Undertale is a remix of a Homestuck track.

This is one of those things that as a member of the real world I will never understand. Whenever I look at Undertale, it looks like a shitty JRPG clone with awful graphics and a bit of randomness for the tumblr crowd, yet people are claiming it's the ultimate masterpiece and second coming of Jesus Christ.
