Can we get a Oculus thread?
>>
Do you think they'll hold to a Q1 release? I want to throw a couple hundred dollars don't the figurative toilet so I can through dollars downa virtual toilet.
>>
If we do, let's get all the trolly misinformation out of the way.

>eyestrain
>forced facebook login
>facebook datamining
>no porn or other non-approved software. Even outside their app store
>only slow walking simulators will work, else the player's head will explode!
>If you've ever tried a 3D movie or TV, you already know what VR is and can judge it from that alone.
>>
If they really do release Q1 I'll be happy.
>>
>>321744087
It's not worth discussing VR on /v/, you'd be better off in Reddit

Are they still releasing the Touch controllers months after the Rift?

From all the demos they look pretty complete and it's probably important for a lot of the planned games.
>>
I hope this VR shit is a fad.

I don't want to play games with a fucking monitor on my face. Even the greatest experts of VR agree that with VR you will never be able to do crazy shit like teleport around or run way too fast or get control taken away from you or rotate with close objects in sight.

The VR future people want is just not a future worth having, even in it's most perfect function.

See, they say that, and then jap devs put you in REZ, break all the rules, and it worked fine.

Seriously, REZ in VR is gamechanging because all those fucking rules are broken and it still works.
>>
>>321745187
Wasn't there a shitstorm about these things being bundled because it forces people to pay for things they don't want?
>>
>>321745345
There wasn't because they aren't.
The shitstorm, if you want to call some anons getting upset that, was that they've bundled an xbone controller with the headset.
Also, you're probably underestimating stuff like Touch or the Vive controllers.
>>
I will say that im impressed with the dk2, been using it to play Elite:Dangerous and i can say its pretty tits
>>
>>321745486
Wait so they bundle an xbox controller instead of the more relevant controllers that were made specifically for it?
>>
>>321745773
The xbone controller is free though.
>>
>>321745773
yes, because developers developed with an xbox controller in mind. the first iteration of the touch controllers are shipping to devs in the last couple days.

>>321745191

reminder that VR porn and teledildonics are already here and if you have a smartphone and like $30 to drop, you can enjoy it with Google cardboard

Look up virtualrealporn
Enjoy
>>
>>321745887
Yeah they totally don't add the price of the controller to the price of the headset.
>>
>>321746087
they actually don't
palmer stated twice that you can sell the controller and come up with a little money on top
>>
>>321745031
I'm hype, but holy shit this.

I remember back when the Kickstarter launched and they said they would be aiming for an affordable price range, ~$300

Now it's the price of a fucking smartphone
>>
>>321745191
>teleport around
>get control taken away from you
You can but it breaks immersion and isn't that great anyway.

>rotate with close objects in sight.
>run way too fast
These are perfectly fine. Holding objects close is actually pretty neat in VR. Just watch a vid of 'I expect you to die'.
>>
>>321746275
>breaks immersion
It breaks immersion on a screen too.
In fact, that's the fucking point.
It's supposed to break immersion. That's its function.
>>
>>321746214
>come up with a little money on top
I don't get it
>>
>>321746361
He's suggesting you can buy the rift, sell the Xbox controller, and make back your 600 and then some more
>>
>>321745887
Nothing is free in the real world.
>>
>>321746361
>buy oculus rift cv1
>sell controller for $50
congrats, now you've paid $50 less for your HMD
>>
>>321746327
Why would you want such a shitty function then?

>>321746273
>>321745031
Is there an actual source on this? All I'm finding in the $500 mark are estimates of the Rift plus computer upgrades. The headset itself is still $350
>>
>>321746549
>Is there an actual source on this?
no. people are speculating.
Nate Mitchell said $1500 with a PC, so you're around that $500 ballpark.
>>
>>321746529
It is when console companies are giving controllers away as a promotional stunt.
>>
>>321746537
How does this prove the $50 wasn't already part of the rift's price?
>>
>>321746549
>Why would you want
How much experience do you have with video games?
>>
I'm waiting with baited breath for all the new VR porno that is going to spread like wildfire on these devices.
>>
>>321746669
how does it prove the opposite?
>>
>>321746754
See >>321746049
It already happened
It's already happening
>>
>>321746669
How does it prove that it was to begin with?

Microsoft is obviously interested in their controller being the 'default' for VR games. A controller at production cost per $350+ headset is hardly a biggie for them.
>>
>>321746752
Answer the question. Why would you want to break immersion? In VR of all things.

Who Vive here?
>>
>>321746953
For narrative purposes, for surprise, for gameplay aspects, etc
>>
>>321746953
another anon here
try unreal's bullet train
teleportation does not break immersion, it doesn't even break presence.
>>
>>321747026
Why would you need to break immersion for any of those?
>>
>>321747158
That's like asking why combat needs to be turn based in a game.
It doesn't.
It's just one of the many options.

Now answer my question, how much experience do you have with video games?
You sound pretty naive.
>>
>>321746989

>>
>>321744087

>>
>>321747516
I personally have no use for the Vive's stuff.
It's cool and all, but I live in a tiny cramped apartment. I wouldn't be able to use any of the movement stuff.
Hell, I can't even use a fucking PS Move/Kinect in this place.
>>
>>321747667
>I personally have no use for the Vive's stuff.

But you are wrong anon.

-Lighthouse tracking is less CPU intensive even in seated experiences
-Steam vs Oculus, guess who wins
-Cheaper
-More third party support
-First hands on of both systems put the DK of HTC above the CV1 of Oculus, so go figure
-Technical breakthrough!!! (haha nah, just kidding)
>>
>>321746989
So you put your dick in those holes right?
>>
>>321747310
Turn-based combat would seem out of place in a realistic environment but so long as your viewpoint is in a place you'd expect, it wouldn't break immersion. They're pretty different things.

And while there are many options, they're not all good ones.
>>
What are some good games that work well with the DK2? I havnt used mine in a while and want something other than concept demo's to play.
>>
>>321747870
You make good points.

But fuck I want VR right now
Like now
Y'all know Rift comin' out before Vive
>>
>>321747948
yup, I know we are all in that boat
but I sincerely think that going for Oculus is a bad decision in the long run
>>
>>321747926
Elite Dangerous apparently
There is also a whole modding community out there for adding VR support to older games, like mirrors edge
>>
>>321747870

Carmack, bitch. All the people in Valve who knew anything about VR left Valve to work with him.

Just stopping by to say I think it's cool that this project, that a couple of years ago got shit all over it, actually becomes something usable and consumer friendly.
>>
>>321749056
>just strapping a monitor to my face

And a gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer, headtracking lcds, specialised lenses, software to make it all work together, etc, etc.

It's like comparing a car to a soap cart.
>>
>>321749325
I agree, but this won't work with the normies because of the price tags
>>
>>321749730
The normies have stuff like VR Gear to play with. It's not like they'd have desktop PCs that could handle the Rift and Vive anyway.

Oculus and Valve will get on fine with the money from people who buy big PCs.
>>
>>321744767
>forced facebook login
you're so right, godfuckingdamnit.
>>
>>321749980
Gear VR is literally 599 US dollars. Everything else is true. You are proving my point :P
>>
>>321750076
I thought the new one was a lot cheaper. Sure I saw a '£99' somewhere.
>>
>>321749730
You are actually correct, there's no way normies would ever pay to get a premium VR experience, because even if they did shell out the $450-700 for an HMD they'd likely never have (or know how to build) the system to properly utilize it. It'll be years before they get to a consumer friendly price unless they settle on shit-tier low res console VR experiences.
>>
>>321750393
I'm counting the cheapest smartphone, the device itself it's 99, but you'll need the phone so...
>>
>>321750540
I get what you're saying. I wanted to get an S6 so the Gear was an option in future but the extra £200 was a no-go.

Still, like a pc, you'd have a smartphone for other reasons, so it's a bit sketchy to count that towards the cost of a headset.
>>
>>321749723

do any hmds actually use something like that
