No one knows. Adding face buttons on the back was the number one mod to do for 360 controllers, and it started like immediately after the system was released.
Scuf controllers do this.the later versions are similar. I personally liked having 2 buttons in the back with switches for multiple configurations.
Of course they market towards 1337 MLG COD players, so itll never take off like it can

The SCUFs are nowhere as polished as the Elite though. Scufs are modded xbone controllers, and remapping paddle buttons isn't as easy as to configure it in software.

So there is a market for this. Im not saying that cod players are the only people they can sell this to, but they can do it. If given that xbones are what are used at tourneys, MS can say fuck off to scuff. Everyone would use these and the 100 people watching the live stream would get assaulted with a different ad.
