Nobody cares that both cases are almost entirely played for comedy.
The protagonist's gender isn't mentioned because it's not important. They can "date" (befriend) one male and two female characters (who can become the aforementioned significant gay couple) in dating-sim style parody scenes that are generally considered some of the more hilarious parts of the game. Again both tumblr and /v/ assume this is clearly an attempt to advance the SJW agenda instead of just being funny.
Furthermore both sides ignore the fact that all of this is completely optional content contingent on you encouraging those involved to share their feelings, as opposed to you simply ignoring them or murdering them.
