I've always animated directly with the raw rigging. It's not too hard, I can't imagine getting up a control being beneficial enough to offset the time it would take.

In the long run it saves time.
Its like choosing to use one of those non-ik rigs to animate for source games.
You could either have something that auto IK's like how arms actually work or move each individual part.
It will be much easier to animate this with controls vs what it looks like now.
I dunno about you but if I had the choice of pic related or controls I'll pick controls and IK's.
