MH3U was great before 4U existed. I put 400 hours into it on WiiU and 200 on 3DS.
Then 4th gen came around and improved literally everything. I tried going back and it's hard. Losing the sense of verticality feels wrong.

I actually went to playing that after pumping about 1000-ish hours into mh4u trying to get HR999right now sitting at hr 867
and yeah, its pretty damn enjoyable at times.
But man, yeah like you say there anon, that lost sense of verticality sucks ass.
plus that first time facing Duramboros and Lagiacrus was pretty fun up in Moga LR. Duramboros was a pretty fun fight with his swinging in a circle, flinging up in the air, and then come smashing down on you.

Duramboros was almost my favorite monster in 3U if not for his gigantic HP pool.
I'm fucking stoked for him and Narga coming back for X. It's going to be so much fun fighting them with the new mechanics.

Guild quests kill MH4U for me. Their the only quests that provide a challenge but all you see are the same monsters over and over. Also I've spent so much time in the gq areas that I haven't gotten as familiar with the regular ones as I did in 3U.

The two major problems with guild quests
1 - showed off the limitations of monster AI and consequently how high the difficulty of the game could be tuned before it became artificial via raising of HP pools and making everything a health sponge. In turn it became counter-productive to approach 140 GQ's with anything but optimal weapons like HAME runs because it was too easy to be punished otherwise.
2 - monster variety. With the game boasting the biggest variety of large monsters to date, it was incredibly disappointing that endgame was whittled down to a handful of choices for worthwhile runs.
I'm glad they dropped it in X. I like the idea of randomized equipment but they need to make the means of acquiring it less monotonous. It's a shame because I love MH because it's core design battles monotony quite well.

A thousand times this. I've hunted over 400 fucking Rajang alone, and pushing 200 Jhos. You also missed that there needed to be other locations than the fucking everwood. It got old really fast.
