No matter what you do, don't give a fucking weapon to your monks. For some reason the game sells you useless nunchakus at the beginning that only they can equip and that's it, they don't get any other weapons.
The first time I played the game, my monk had his shitty-ass nunchakus that did no damage and I thought monks were trash because of it. Then I realized I had to unequip that piece of shit and he suddenly started hitting like a truck.

Red Mage does it better. Not as squishy and he can actually hit shit so you'll get rid of small enemies faster. Black Mage is the absolute worst at hitting shit, even white mage is better.
The only black magic Red Mage misses out on is high level shit like Flare, which serves no purpose anyway. Offensive magic is shit in this game and not worth the MP. As long as your character can use haste and then spam temper for the rest of the fight, you're good.

Wot. Spells are bought. The few that require you be Red Wizard instead of Mage are stuff like Life, Teleport, Exit, Thundaga, and Blizzaga.
Then black magic damage depends on the game version you're playing. NES has base damage and does more for elemental weakness--so Red is always better than black unless more Spell castings are needed. In GBA, Int score does change damage, but it's not a big of a deal since Melee is always the way to go unless you're killing multiple trash mobs.

You can ship them easily since they are both mages, one uses offensive spells and other uses healing spells, and they are both similar, being alike both brother and sister (or brother and brother).
