Is Gateway still the best flashcard on the market for the 3DS, or has something better come along?
Gateway is almost totally redundant. If you can use a Gateway you can use CFW for free.
Sky3DS/Sky3DS+ is the only 3DS flashcart that matters.
I have one, but I regret getting it earlier this year because I read that there's like a better one now or something.
>>321676857
>recommending a Sky3DS EVER
OP Gateway is the best card on the market if you have to have a card. But you can get piracy with custom firmware without a card for free.
>>321677132
Sky3DS is shit but at least it matters. Gateway and clones are useless now that CFW exists.
>>321677459
But Gateway does literally everything Sky does and more
>>321677556
Apart from work on 9.3+
>>321677132
Don't you still have to buy the right games and, depending on your 3DS model, a save backup device just to load the CFW?
>>321677132
Really? I had no clue that was an option maybe I should look into the custom firmware then.
>>321677692
Nope, we have newer hacks, even on the 3DS.
>>321677810
>*even on the N3DS.
>>321677810
Could you... could you link me to the relevant intrusctions? I was looking into this just a few months back, but because I have a N3DS it required buying a bunch of otherwise useless shit.
>>321679221
You better not have updated it since then.

>>321677810
What CFW should I go for on an old 3ds, not sure the exact firmware but I know it's below 9.2
>>321679874
I use cakes, it just werks
I doubt it, but is there any way to play online/multiplayer with CFW or flashcart?
>>321681875
With CFW you don't even need to do anything special. It just werks.
With flashcarts you have to jump through a few hoops to be 100% safe.
>>321681875
CFW works by installing games onto the console via CIA files. You can play these online with no trouble since CIAs use the console's header for online.
With Gateway you can install CIAs the same way as CFW so that's no issue, but if you want to play a game online using a .3ds file then you have to change it to a .3dz and then insert a private header into the game.
With Sky3DS only the .3ds method is available. Sky3DS users can't remove headers from games themselves to insert into .3ds files so they have to use public headers(which you can get banned for since multiple people using the same header can get detected, but there's only one instance where that happened and everyone got unbanned after like 2 weeks) or have a friend with a Gateway help them. I think they can also use powersaves to do it, but I'm not sure.
>>321681967
>>321682889
Good stuff, I'll have to look into this CFW stuff, I have a Gateway currently that I was just using to try out singleplayer games and shit but it seems like CFW is way better, I wish I researched more before I bought it but it was only like 60 bucks so whatever.
>>321683160
Gateway is more convenient sometimes because you can use .3ds files, but CFW is more feature rich otherwise.
isn't gateway useless since rxtools ?
did I miss something ?
>>321683237
Is there a way to convert 3ds files to CIA or I'm assuming you would just go and try to find cia files right off the bat?
>>321683350
You can convert them, then you need to install them. With plain .3ds files you just stick them on the card. It's simpler.
>>321683445
Gotcha. Thanks for the info buddy, I'll definitely look into implementing this CFW shit when I stop being a lazy fuck.
because i'm a spoonfeeding faglord:
you can use CFW on ANY firmware below 9.2 without a flashcart with the EXCEPTION of 8.1J and any firmware below 4.X. 4.X is unlikely if you've bought a console since late 2012 and 8.1J was the first run of JP N3DS that has a browser block (necessary to run CFW without a flashcart.)
all north american N3DS regular model (happy home designer bundle) are 9.4+. avoid these
most firmwares can be identified by serial number; GBAtemp has a list, look it up. the monster hunter N3DSXL is a safe bet.
all regular 2DS sets are perfect, usually on 6.0 EXCEPT for the new yokai watch bundle. the 2DS is comfy as fuck if you get cramps and you're not missing out on much besides qt as fuck ac amiibo cards + 3D porn from /h/
the most important thing to remember: BACK UP YOUR SHIT. back it up ten goddamn times. follow directions word for word, back up your sysNAND BEFORE YOU DO A GODDAMN THING so that if you manage to fuck it all up you're not fucked over
IMPORTANT PSA: you can't update your emuNAND on an N3DS past 9.5. don't even think about it fuccboi. most roms requiring 9.5+ will be patched to be able to work. there's no way around it. old 3DS/XL/2DS can update to 10.3+ though
>>321684760
I have an old 3ds, how do you check firmware?
>>321685048
go to your system settings and your FW will be in the top screen on the bottom right
if you're not using a flashcart how do you put games on it? you have to install them all to the sd?
right now i got a gateway with 32gb in it for roms and a 32gb for installed games + emunand
>>321685205
Alright thanks, seems like I have 10.3.0-28U. Damn, I can't do it since its not 9.2 or below. Kind of disappointed, wish I knew about it sooner.
>>321685543
Yes, on SD
>>321677459
Sky is no longer compatible with high enough firmware titles, so recommending it is a shit idea.
>>321685580
Buy a new one used, you'll save more in games in the long term.
>>321685950
it's not the firmware, it's the cart protocol
and that's what the sky3ds+ is for
>>321685580
you can still use a sky3DS for 3DS roms and homebrew for emulators (GBA, SNES etc.) is still possible on the latest firmware
but no CFW >for free
>>321685950
It had nothing to do with firmware. Specific games had anti-Sky DRM.
So they released a new Sky+ to get around it, and that card is finally update-able so it won't be a problem in the future. Using Sky isn't ideal, but it still works on every firmware and the newest version works with every game.
>kept up-to-date on everything related to PSP hacking
>learned how to downgrade, install cfw and unbrick models/firmwares I didn't even have
>feel like a retard around everything related to the 3ds scene, have literally no idea what I'm doing
>feel like a grandpa working a new vcr when my gateway came in and only now finding out I don't even need it.
Either PSP shit was simple as fuck or I'm getting dumber
>>321676786
I'll just leave this here. It's just been updated at #32C3.
https://smealum.github.io/3ds/
>>321686339
the 3ds scene is a mess, that's all
Last I knew CFW was only an option for N3DS unless you used the CubicNinja game or something. Is that still the case? I'm pretty behind on everything.
>>321686339
3DS stuff is very poorly handled at the moment. There is so much going on it is very hard to keep track of the accomplishments. The scene is also nearly ruined by the fact that the main developers are moral fags who refuse to make things easy in return for not allowing piracy (which happens anyways).
>>321686557
nope.
In fact Gateway needs CN (or OoT, or even CFW) and CFW doesn't need anything.
>>321686625
Is CFW available for the old 3DS models?
>>321686602
>>321686471
I feel like an idiot but this makes me feel a bit better. I remember ignoring my PSP for years and getting up to date in like 30 minutes. This feels much more scattered.
>>321687145
yup, all models
