This, followed by installation of Morrowind + expansions.

should've bought morrowind first.

this except for the part about installing another bethesda game

If you're serious here's what I'd suggest.
Play Oblivion first, its optional but will give you an appreciation for what Skyrim changes, and also a hatred for what they take away.
Play Skyrim vanilla.
Get mods and do a new playthrough.

Thanks!

Horse anus
Refund it.
Get Oblivion instead.
Ignore Morrowindfags.
Modding it is going to be the only fun way to play. the vanilla game is absolute garbage. as for "lore friendly" most mods are pretty lore friendly exception to the fucking guns people added. Even the nude mods are lore friendly because I really doubt people in the elder scrolls universe wore underwear unless they were rich.
Skyrim is a game that sits in an irritating grey area between good games like Morrowind and Daggerfall and garbage games like Oblivion
Play it as-is and see if you have fun, then if you do or don't, look up mods, and decide if you want to invest the time to mid it.
I play them vanilla on console and haven't burst into flames, it's a good way to spend an hour or two exploring/finding stuff.

Vanilla playthrough. Once you're done with that, go into Skyrim Nexus, download like 100 mods you like (You will, even if not all at once) and play again.
pick up dark souls instead OP
you will be amazed at the lound footstep soundeffects, like clopping all the time, and you cant mute that annoying jap shit
and neogaf says the combat is super hardcore, but honestly the gameplay is about 6/10 at it's best moments
seriously, dont be a casual OP
git gud

OP just fucking ignore every faggot above me with the ebin memes. I would suggest playing it Vanilla first and see what you felt was lacking and look for mods in that area. That is what I did though I started on console with it. After playing it on console I found mods that improved graphics, gameplay, atmosphere and added more content to the game in areas where I was looking for it. Like I said play it vanilla first though you could install graphics mods since that wont change the game other than how good it looks, then just add to it from there. I apply the same idea to the other TES games in the past.
Vanilla until you literally cannot stand it
After that, install mods that enhance the parts of the game you legitimately like and alleviate some of the grievances you have with the game
In the case that you hate everything, which is very possible, either uninstall it or install all of the waifu mods and use it as a lower-class Oblivion

Good idea

guide to enjoying any game that is ritualistically hated on /v/:
>don't come to /v/ or listen to anything /v/ has to say
>play the fucking game by yourself
>build your own opinion
>if needed/wanted play other games from same franchise and compare
>never come back to /v/ because /v/'s opinion is shit regardless
>???
>profit
protip: this guide also applies to all games in general.
1. play vanilla for hour or two
2. regret buying it
3. consider suicide
4. fuck off to tesgeneral.com
5. have mild amounts of fun
6. love the lore and go play previous games
8. there was no 7
9. question marks
10. profit

I'm on step 4
Don't play vanilla,
get all mods that look like it improves the game graphically and functionally.
For example, a horse mod that makes the horse not complete utter dog shit

here's some shit I'd suggest OP
>http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/3863/?

if you want a nice looking gorefest
>http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/141/?
if you want your trees and other related shit to actually look good
>http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/25704/?
if you want a GOAT dlc sized quest
>http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/46465/?
if you're getting a shitton of game crashes
>http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/22745/?
if you want footprints when you're walking in snow/ash/etc.
if you want oblivion-esque face to face conversations with NPCs
This is just scratching the surface though, there are plenty other great mods you can try
