Nintendo is riding the wave of Mario's brand recognition to try to sell completely different games with the same characters.
Megaman only had a few spinoffs, but they were mostly at the height of the brand's popularity, and the same idea was probably behind them. Megaman died for the same reason Metroid is on ice right now, declining sales and lack of interest in the genre. The only difference is megaman games were cheap to make, and metroid games aren't.

Excluding the GC's Mario Party you only really get 1 entry, sometimes two(Mario & Luigi) of a Mario series that appears on a console. Like Mario Kart is 23 years old and it has 8 entries across 8 console/handhelds from SNES all the way to WiiU.
Whereas Megaman Battle Network had 5 entries(including Battle Chip Challenge) on the GBA.

The Covenant in Halo are called Covenant b/c they are a collections of species joined together for the same cause but each species has it's own name. Space pirates all have the same fucking goal as one another with each spices joining together to make that happen. So we have Zebesians, Keyhunters & more alien species that joined the Pirates, so in other words Zebesians other name is "Space Pirate" same can be said for the Keyhunters now shut the fuck up Primefag, Retro should have named the different species in the Pirates, they were just lazy.

Super did it right by one explaining what species was in the Space Pirates & two having you fight them all. The Prime series should have did this.
