Do Normal first then Pain mode after your first play through. Joyful is good as an epilogue, especially right now with a sale price, get it too.

LISA: The Painful
The main thing about Pain Mode is that save points are one-use so you have to ration them. There aren't many differences other than one boss being really fucking nasty and some random joy mutants being sprinkled over locations where there aren't any in normal mode. It's not that bad if you ration your save points, take care not to fall off cliffs and build your party well.

If you expect it to last as long as Painful and have as many likable characters and as much gameplay, especially because it's only about 1/4 of the Painful, then yes you might see it as bad, especially if you hate cuntish kids even if they have a reason to be complete cunts.
As an epilogue that closes off plot points as well as they can be closed, it's good.
