Greatest story in a video game?

I mean the best told and most effective in any game, not whatever story you happen to like in "muh favorite game", by the way, although I know the thread will fill up with muh favorite games anyway
>>
The Last of Us, though neo-/v/ will disagree.
>>
>>321592514
>neo-/v/
The majority opinion on /v/ has always been that it sucks.
>>
>>321592629
Exactly, by neo-/v/ I usually mean post 2010 /v/.
>>
>>321592514
in a world of deus ex, planescape, nier, and so many others, this is the dominant position and was even hailed as an evolution of video game storytelling, some kind of bar being raised

I hate that game
>>
Planet Escape Tournament.
>>
Ghost Trick
>>
>>321592796
It did a better job at conveying its story than any of the games you listed. Sometimes the majority opinion is correct. Trying too hard to be contrarian for the sake of being contrarian is asinine.

off the top of my head

Kotor 2 for it's take on the force.
Planescape torment needs no justification
Journey for the execution alone
Ico and Shadow of the colossus for the subtlety
Metal gear solid 2 even if it's kinda retconned

Feel free to disagree tho
>>
>>321593473
>Kotor 2 for it's take on the force.

that isn't really what makes it great at all but okay

The trilogy, and Edgeworth's two retcon games to make him a three-dimensional character.
Apollo justice wasn't THAT bad, and I haven't played Dual destinies so I can't comment on that.
Watched the entire VS professor layton game on youtube, but that's more of a Layton game anyway
>>
>>321592514
>The game is less than 2 years old
That game is a defining game of neo- /v/
>>
>>321593634
that's what makes it great to me
feel free to share you're thoughts on it maybe i missed something
>>
>>321593787
I heard Dual destinies refered as "entry level"
it's the only AA i played and i can sort of see it.

was fun but nothing mind blowing

did you get /v/ and neo-/v/ confused or something?
its other way around, bud
you're neo-/v/, get over it
>>
>>321594289
This is actually a good contender, but I feel the actual presentation falters too often, especially early on, to warrant the title
>>
>>321592276
You nailed it, OP. Might be biased since I felt A LOT of the side stories tugged at the feels, especially when acquiring different endings, but that coupled with the flawless OST made for a fucking experience that's hard to forget.

Lost Odyssey is also pretty damn good but I couldn't bare the monotonous turn based combat to complete it. Nier also falls in the category of poor gameplay but at least I could bum rush through shit to progress the story and not be stuck in a battle for too long.

No, that's

I might just be subhuman, but the first time I tried to visualize that plot, I got a violent headache.

Absolutely nothing compares to the collective story of Drakengard, Nier and Drakengard 3. If only one game, then Nier.

But no one plays those games

Not really, but it's a pretty damn good contender.

Never underestimate kiddie looking games for they often pack good stories

I bought a PS3 just for Nier and Drakengard 3. It was beyond worth it.

Bioshock 2

A story about fatherhood and compassion that has great complex characters and intelligent views on morality and how it affects others.

I've been itching to replay Nier for a couple of days now since we last had a similar thread about stories in games. Especially after some anon mentioned how the wolf shade was the biggest asshole but wasn't aware of the Ending B side of the story but fuck.. that gameplay. Not sure I can do it. It's not even that it's bad it's just.. so painfully fucking generic.

Undertale for having main plot and even flavor text tied to gameplay elements.

The Fall was short, sweet, and effective. Good for sci-fi.

Final Fantasy 10 is certainly up there.

Mass Effect is probably one of the most involved story-telling modern games.

Major Nier and Drakengard 3 spoilers

I have some questions for all of you

Is Kaine what Accord meant when she said that she would see Zero again? Or did she mean the grotesque queen?

Are Lunar Tear flowers in Nier, you know, The Flower?

Did the rivalry of wolves and men in Nier begin with the events of Drakengard 3? With the army of the land of sands capturing them to use them for war?

I play on a 3440x1440 monitor on a 980 build.

I don't think I can go back to PS3, given that those games aren't based on a timeless artstyle or anything.
>>
Nier will always be the best in my eyes.
That shit is truly amazing and special, no other form of media could end like that besides a game.
>>
>>321595195
>It's not even that it's bad it's just.. so painfully fucking generic.

There is literally no game with gameplay like Nier in totality, it isn't the constant hack and slash you remember, it incorporates over a dozen different genres without interlude.

The normal melee is fairly good and standard, but generic is not a word befitting the game
>>
>>321595549
1. She was most likely talking about her as the grotesquerie queen
2.Probably not, but who knows
3.I doubt it because of Niervese being an entirely different dimension than Drakengardverse &. Nier wolves were just pissed about the forest going away and blamed the humans
>>
>>321592276
Probably Deus Ex, honestly. The pacing is great, the player input is great - everything is great.

>Games only you've played

Planescape Torment is probably the best because of it's look at what makes someone who they are.

Nier is great just for how it twists information around to make new shit.

Kotor 2 is great for it's deconstruction of dogmatic satan or jesus choices in video games.

Personal favorite. The final battle is probably my favorite example of the telling a story using gameplay.
