It's a pretty all right game. Excuse any ridiculous plot points and remember you're playing a Final Fantasy game. They all have ridiculous stories.
Limit breaks are your friend. You don't really have to pay much attention to the draw/ magic system if you don't want to. Just be sure to junction shit to your strength and speed whenever you do have the magic to do so. Don't sit there for a half an hour maxing out a spell. That shit is what people complain about the most.
There's only a few tutorials and you better pay attention to them because junction can be confusing if you don't. Also git gud at the card game and learn the Refine skills on your GFs so you can get magic from cards instead of drawing it like a chump.

Step 1: Proceed until you get Diabolos (before Timber). Distribute your GFs such that one has Quetzalcoatl only (add Brothers, later on), one has Shiva + Diabolos, one has Ifrit + Siren.
Step 2 (which for earlier GFs can be done concurrently with step 1): Learn Card (Quetz), Card Mod (Quetz), Str-J (Shiva), and Time Mag-RF (Diabolos). Optional but helpful: Learn other stat junctions, other refinement abilities, Ifrit's Str +20%/40%, and Siren's and Diabolos's party abilities.
Step 3: Obtain the Quistis and Zell cards. (This may possibly require an intermediary step of getting a few other playing cards to get a decent hand first.) Card Mod them for 3 Samantha Souls and 3 Hyper Wrists respectively.
Step 4: Time Mag-RF the Samantha Souls into 60 Triples on each of three party members, then exchange them around so that the Triples are concentrated (either 90/90 or 100/80 quantity distribution) on the people with Str-J (i.e. the two GF setups that *aren't* Quetz-only). Junction Triple to Str.
Step 5: Use Hyper Wrists on Quetz, Shiva, and Ifrit to teach Str +60% to each of them, and assign that as a character ability. If Ifrit knows Str +20% and/or Str +40% as well, assign that too (+40% of course, if you have both). It would be beneficial to go with a 100/80 distribution in this case, with the 100 quantity being on whoever has Ifrit.

the story wouldn't be that bad if the game didn't make the love of squall and rinoa so fucking integral to the whole plot. Their relationship is the lynch pin on all the monsters going into super berserk mode. Squall would of never hiked over a bridge across the sea while carrying Rinoa.
