I recently got an external hard drive for my Wii U so I can download the 4 data packs for XenoX and other games I'll buy digitally. It is a 1 TB MyPassport Ultra that comes with a USB 3.0 cable that says it's compatible with USB 2.0. When I try to format the hard drive on my Wii U, pic related doesn't change. I waited almost half an hour and my Wii U still doesn't read the hard drive. I've checked everywhere where to find a solution to my problem, and I don't know what to do.

What should I do about this /v/?
>>
Does that thing have a power plug of its own? I use a WD MyBook for my Wii U and it works like a charm, never had the slightest issue.

You see, Nintendo is so cheap that the USB ports on the Wii U might not provide enough voltage for a USB drive that doesn't have its own power supply.
>>
>>321584340
Might need a y splitter the ports are only 2.0
>>
Get a Y-cable. I have a Toshiba 3.0 Canvio 1TB with a 3.0 Y-Cable.

Xeno load times are fucking fast.
>>
http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1359/~/what-external-storage-devices-can-be-used-with-wii-u%3F

>To ensure maximum performance between your Wii U and an external storage device, we recommend using a hard-disc drive (HDD) with a dedicated power source (i.e., using an A/C adapter). Due to the wide range of external storage devices, usability and performance will vary.
>>
Had the same problem. Get a y-cable. As long as it has two usb ends, it can go in the front fine and fully powered.
>>
>>321584809
This, I had to do it when I got my external or my Wii U.
>>
I'm thinking of picking up a Bipra 60GB harddrive because its cheap and I'm poor. It doesn't have a seperate converter, so I guess I'm just getting a y-cable. Anyone else doing or done something similar?
>>
>>321584653
No it doesn't come with a power plug

>>321584778
>>321584809
>>321587014
Y-cable it is then. Which ones are recommended for my hard drive in particular or will any one will do?

Ok so why the fuck can't you use 2 usb thumb sticks on the WiiU? What the fuck is wrong with that? Who decided that fuckery?

>>321587703
you need to power it with an Y cable with 2 ports of the WiiU.
>>
>>321587663
I think those come with an y cable

Can you even use a usb drive at all?

Yes but only 1 even though there are 4 ports.
>>
>>321589404
There was a thread a few days ago with smug anons bragging to y cable users that their usb sticks worked fine.

>>321589409
Thank you for an actual response.
>>
>>321584340
>>321584653
This. You have to get an hdd with an external power supply. The Wii U USB ports don't provide enough power and end up shitting out your motor.
>>
>>321589740
I was just confused why you were asking that in a thread with all the information you need.

>>321589409
Why would you need 4 at once? I mean it's pointless to disable the support for multiple drives at once but nobody should need it.
>>
>>321589905
To have more storage?
What kind of question is that
>>
Recommended external hard drive?
>>
>>321589905
Are we really reading the same thread? I'm telling you the answers were vastly different before, but whatever. That's enough replying.
>>
>>321590120
But what reason is there to plug them all in at the same time?

Also you can cheaply get so much space on a single external HDD these days you'll never need 2 for Wii U usage, much less 4.
>>
>>321590321
Anything should work so long as you use a Y cable or the drive has its own power supply but I have a Buffalo one if you want a "works for sure" answer.
>>
>>321590591
I am talking about thumb drives not HDDs.
Why I have to transfere my saves when using a new stick and are unable to play when there are 2 USB sticks inserted is beyond retarded.

>>321590820
Why do you need to transfer anything? Just stick in the thumb drive that has the game you want to play and it'll be fine? Or stick in one with free space if you are downloading a new game.
>>
>>321584340
next time read the bloody manual u retarded kek no wonder why u pick the wiiu if you are dat retarded

Because I don't feel like swaping constantly?
There is no excuse for this retarded only 1 drive policy.
>>321591085
That's how I roll
>>321591347
But keep in mind that will likely need an additional power supply.
>>
>>321591180
cuck is not filtered anymore you faggot.
>>
>>321591545
But how. Did you bought it second hand? Is refurbished? Hack the vWii pham.
>>
>>321591545
nop you only need a y-cable which is like 1$
>>
>>321587663
I picked up a white Wii U at launch and, having done my homework, realized that 8 GB wasn't going to be worth shit, so I picked up a 500 GB Canvio Connect for about $50.

Couple that with a Y-cable, and it's been good to me for three years without failure.

I bought it from a guy at work for 150€ like this.
He said his dog ate the white pad and they just got a black one off of Ebay.

I got mine for 27€ on Amazon and before I could even open it the price went down to 16€ where it's still at

So does anybody have any expirience with this?
How much better does battery life get?
>>
>>321589409
What? I connected 2 external devices on the back usb ports on my wiiU. I had an 8 gig thumb drive act as temp storage while I waited for my Y-cable to come in. Then I transfered from the thumb drive to the external and that was that. How could I have done this with a 1 external device limit?
>>
>>321593502
I'm tempted to buy it. I just know those fuckers will stop making them and then they'll turn in to the next gamecube component cable.
>>
>>321594846
you can't play with 2 thumb sticks inserted, only transfere data.
>>
My external didn't work on my Wii U until I got one of these things, now it works perfectly.
>>
>>321595130
> I just know those fuckers will stop making them
? You would still have a battery that let's you play longer

yes
>>
>>321595426
would YOU pay 45+ USD for a battery? I'm tempted but I hope that somehow 3rd party batteries come out soon.
>>
You need a Y Cable or an external power supply OP.

Nintendo is still living in 2001 with pretty much everything.

They exist in a time before bus powered drives existed. They really deserve more hate for this.
>>
Is there a negative effect for using y cable
>>
>>321596301
Oh so you are afraid it will get more expensive but aren't willing to buy one for 20€ now.
I thought you meant it will somehow become useless.

Anyways there are 3rd party batteries but they are only a bit cheaper ~17€.
>>
>>321596559
no
>>
>>321584340
>What should I do about this /v/?

Get a decent PC instead.
>>
>>321584340

You need to get a USB 3.0 Y cable for the HDD to get enough energy, its the one this guy posted.

>>321595606

Also, you need to deactivate the sleep mode function of the HDD, if you dont when you are playing and leave the game for a while the HDD will go to sleep mode and you will get an error.

To do this you need to go to the System Settings and go to the Data Management section. Click in and on the first screen where it says "Copy/move/delete data" and "Format USD storage device" hold Down on the D - Pad and then press + and -, hold for a while and a screen will appear asking you if you want to disable sleep mode on the HDD, press disable and thats it.

The reason why is enabled is because of "power consumption", something really stupid considering it takes way to little energy and I dont know why Nintendo hide this.
>>
>>321597850
why 3.0?
>>
>>321598159
The USB ports of the Wii U are literally shit so you need the best to get enough energy for the HDD, the other option would be getting and external power source for the HDD but that would be up to you.

Basically, Nintendo didnt think well about what they where doing and now we get annoying shit like that. Remember to deactivate the sleep mode, most people dont know about it because its a hidden function and Nintendo didnt say shit about it on any manual.
>>
>>321598423
I wonder what they will fuck up with the NX
>>
>>321587703
the wii u does not supply powered ports. Your external needs a dedicated power supply.
