I actually like Super more from what I've played so far.
Explorers of Sky's pacing is weirdly fast.Chapters are going by like its nothing and major story events and problems are already being brought up. There also doesn't seem to be enough characterization going on for my partner and I feel like I was just thrown right into an exploration team without any buildup.

Admittedly I haven't beaten super yet but I felt the overall story and characters of explorers were better. Super's gameplay is better but not enough in opinion to make the full game better, definitely the second best though.

If you liked the pacing of Super then you have the right idea.
Things are gonna move really quickly from now on. Where Super had the class and the society, Sky just has the guild, the main story gets moving very quickly.

It's a roguelike dungeon crawler. You're a human who turned into a pokemon and now you go on adventures in the pokemon world. You plan your inventory and team, trek through randomly generated dungeons, and kill whatever's at the end of it. Good story, plenty of content, an enjoyable timesink. Super's better if you played Rescue Team and Explorers but you don't need to have done it.

You're a human that got transformed into a Pokemon and lost his memories. Unsure of what happened, you must try to figure out what happened to you and why you're there while trying to solve a crisis happening in the world.
Gameplay consists of entering and exploring randomly generated dungeons, where every move you make counts as a turn where all enemies in the dungeon make their own moves. You must traverse each floor of a dungeon to find the stairs to the next floor of the dungeon until you reach the end and/or until you reach the floor your current objective/job is on. Objectives can range from finding and delivering an item to a Pokemon, escorting a Pokemon with you from the beginning to a pa0rticular area in the dungeon, finding lost items and loot, and battling opponent Pokemon teams in challenge battles, among other things. The game puts a high emphasis on using items and preparing before a dungeon, as it'll often pit you up against much higher leveled Pokemon than yourself, and you must use the appropriate items to help you win and overcome the odds. For instance, one might wind up in a Monster House (ambushed by a huge number of Pokemon at once) and use a Totter Orb or Sleep Orb to make all enemies in the room confused and/or sleep and then escape, or maybe just use a blast seed to do significant amount of damage against a tough opponent.

In terms of story, it'll seem that way at first but it gets pretty heavy once you're a ways into it. Gameplay wise, its not kid friendly at all, although it has a very slow beginning with a long ass tutorial.

This pleases me greatly. DESU all the games had a kiddy story to start with and got heavier over time. The ability to pick your mon is a neat alternative tho, number of times I restarted the first game to try and get pikachu (Because being pikachu made half the bosses significantly easier because bird trio)...
To that end, without spoilers, is there a similar situation like that where one particular type just makes the game a shit load easier? Or is it generally more balanced nowadays? As said, the first game was significantly easier if you got pikachu.

I honestly don't know, really. There are starters that are better than others, but i can't remember what the general consensus was. The bosses you go up against are pretty varied though, and its certainly not a situation of mostly birds.
