Demon's Souls is excellent, and has consistent quality.

I feel like DeS kind of gets dicked by these sorts of lists because it's like 500p 30fps with frame drops. It's one of the only games that actually deserves a PS4 port, unlike fucking everything else they've made for it. TLOU was the most blatant cash grab I've ever seen in gaming, like ACTUALLY. They port that year old game with a poor framerate/resolution (pick one) and yet they don't port something that actually suffers greatly from the hardware it's on.

Dark Souls insistence on open world gameplay at the cost of world design & incredibly weak second half hold it back from being superior to the original. Demon's Souls has more of the feeling of a classic choose your own adventure book written in a language that isn't your first that Miyazaki was originally going for. Bloodborne is also open world and is plagued with a lot of the issues DaS has, but at least the lore and atmosphere in that one is interesting

Demons souls lacks content, lacks the abundance of appropriate difficulty and interesting challenges, and feels mechanically weaker than future games.
The areas are pretty decent, but bloodborne is superior in the atmosphere regards, and dark souls is superior in exploration and wonder.

Demon's Souls gets harder the more you die and still manages to feel challenging and difficult no matter what order you play the areas in. Meanwhile Dark Souls can hardly manage to make the latter half of its game anything other than a cake walk because the enemies and world design don't challenge the player at all. Meaning that the only difficult area in the second half is the first one you pick because after that you're over leveled for the other areas.

To be fair some of the new item placement really improves the game (like finding the ember in the lost bastille instead of the iron keep).
On the other hand I hated the neutered enemy placement in some areas. It's not my fault babies can't deal with seven syan knights before Velstaldt, or can't sidestep those homing soul arrows in the shrine of amana.

yeah Dragon Shrine was completely neutered. There's only 1 spawn each of the giants (you fight each one 1v1) and the Dragon Knights won't fight you unless you attack them (with the exception of a super gold one just before the ancient dragon). There's also like 1 black phantom spawn

Now the place is swarming with those drakekeepers, but they don't attack you (unless you attack first). You have to defeat those gigantic armored knights. If you defeat them, you can continue climbing. If you just run past them, the drakekeepers attack you. Also, In the final stairs, before the ancient dragon, instead of two armored knights you have to fight a drakekeeper red phantom. If you defeat him you can go to the ancient dragon. If you run past him, well, be ready to fight like 15 drakekeepers.
