FF8 or FF9?
Need a new FF to play, and can't decide between these two. From what I've seen, I think character models look better in 8 than 9, but other than that I have no idea which of the two is better.
And given that they're both final fantasy, I've heard extremely mixed opinions about both

Both are good. IX is a lot less edgy though.
IF you're NEW to the series, than IX is probably the absolute best jumping off point.
It's simple, charming, has a good cast of characters, and really showcases what FF is all about.
9 is a great ride for the first 2 1/2 discs, then it gets pretty boring and rushed.
8 is a great ride for the first disc, then it shits the bed completely. Nothing makes sense and the story is dogshit.
9 is more worth it, especially if you're playing on an emulator.

I think the only reason to not pick ix is if you know how to use the junction system in viii. Otherwise the choice doesn't matter

8 goes full retard on disc 3, the romance is worse compared to 9's (because 8's gets no development), FF8 has levelscaling, and all the ways you can get spells (shit card game, drawing, refining) are all annoying as fuck
8 is garbage and a lot of people felt burned by it, that and the rushed out IX damaged the series.
8 is not even near perfect but I like it a lot more than 9. Just never was engaged by 9, it was pandering to nostalgia at the time and is not engaging today.
But really it comes down to whether you like fantasy or sci fi more. 8 is mostly sci fi and 9 is pure fantasy.

my top three final fantasies in no order are 6, 7 and 9.
8 is one of my least favorites in the series.

FF8 has an interesting set of mechanics to play around with, but ultimately suffers from those mechanics being easily exploitable and grindy. The story is also shit.
FF9 has a classic Final Fantasy set up with every character having a distinct role in the party. Despite that, its story is interesting and it has a lot of extra content hidden within it.
Get IX
The only FFs that are universally considered to be shit is the FFXIII saga so play them all faggot.

If you want something with a radically different battle system, go with 8.
If you want a more traditional FF, go with 9.
8 feels like a massive attempt to not stand on the shoulders of 7 and do something very different then previous games, while 9 feels like a celebration of the older FF's like 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

For example, MGSV's open world was a fucking disastrous nightmare. Holy fuck, I probably spent 2/5 of my gameplay time running through empty bullshit forestry and sand. FFXV better not pull those shenanigans. If it does, I'm dropping it.
It looks pretty though and the battle system looks decent. I've always favored the classic turn-based system/ATB system, just cause its comfy and familiar, but willing to try out the new battle system if it's good.

after I've completed my 7 re-run I'm going to play 8 and after that I might try out 10 and hope it can keep my interest beyond the first 3 hours.
VIII is the most weird and unique jrpg ever made. You probably won't like it.
IX is really charming and comfy. Pretty standard stuff. You'll probably like it.

For me personally its already better then 13. The reason for that is that it has people in it. Recall that in 13, you bought everything not from a person, but a MACHINE. It just felt like a long hallway with nothing to interact with. No towns. No people. Nothing. FF10 was the first to start giving that "hallway" feeling, but at least it had towns and people to talk to.
From what I have heard of 15 so far, its seeming to be a lot better then 13 was. Tons of hobby based sidequest systems. Chocobo riding has advanced tactics. Confirmed that there will be a airship, even if they have to add it in as free DLC after the game comes out. It feels like ever since 8, we always have that one "black sheep" installment where the director wanted to be "so different, unique, and innovative!", and goes completely against the typical FF formula in the worse of ways.
