Just got a core 2 duo pc with 4GB ddr3 RAM. Would getting a GPU like gtx960 or r9380 make it run games on medium settings at 720p? or is it just a piece of crap and should be thrown away?

This is true, some games rarely utilize the CPU at all, but it still pretty damn old. I would probably get a nice video card, a 960 will do. Just use it until it starts fucking up, then get a new CPU, RAM and mobo.
Move the GPU to your new build and you'll be golden.

Old games, sure. Games that normally run well on PC, sure. Bad ports with bloated requirements, it won't.

As long as the PSU has enough wattage and the motherboard has an extra PCIe slot, it wouldn't hurt to buy one. You won't be getting the full performance of the card, but medium at 720p is definitely achievable, save for a few modern games which are able to take advantage of more than 2 cores, or just games that are particularly CPU intensive, like Dark Souls or GTAV.
Besides, it's not like you can't just use the card in a newer build sometime in the future. I'd say go for it.

it would on 1080p settings, I have a E8400 and out of curiosity looked up some benchmarks on how it would run with the newest GPUs. It will works, but forget about 60fps, you're losing so much performance over a cheap ass i5 2500, so at least invest into that. I'd recommend a gtx750 for now more. that's what I'm using and it works decently before I upgrade.

It could play a lot of games on low-medium@720. but some games(mainly newer) wont launch or getting extremely shitty fps because of it being a dated dual core. you could always see if your mobo could handle a core2quad and get a cheap one of those and swap it in.

If you want to be on extreme budget, get a cheap AMD. Yes, amd sucks , intel is better etcetc, but a 100$ amd WILL beat a 100$ intel in gaming. That's pretty much it though, if you spend 200$ on a processor AMD isn't viable anymore, but for turbobudget builds they're okayish

I had and E8400 C2D in 2011 paird with a 4890, I got a GTX560Ti thinking it would smoothen my gaming, I remember booting up Hard Reset and thinking fucking hell shit, it still doesn't run decently. Got a 2500k a week later and still going strong. So my opinion is, no, you can't pair a C2D with a modern GPU and get acceptable results. This varies on a game-by-game basis though.

Yeah I dropped a 750 in a dell optiplex core2quad. Only play at 1080 so I crank settings lower and lower until it just works. I want to double my ram 4gb is barely enough anymore.
