From what I understand, "metal gear" is a mistranslation of "artificial link ", ie as in the missing link in evolution.
Metal Gears (the mechs) are designed as a midpoint between human infantry and artillery, Snake and the other clones also fall under the broad umbrella of "Metal Gear" in-universe as they are the link between human infantry and weapons.

Anyway, the series is called Metal Gear, which is the name of the mechas in the series. Solid is more of a subtitle, but became it's own series like Metroid to Metroid Prime. It should make enough sense.
I didn't go to video game title school. I went to films.
it's put together from the weapon "Metal Gear" which was the name of the series before the first MGS on PS, and "Solid", the codename of the protagonist of the old Metal Gear games and the new MGS game
so it makes total sense

It should probably be rendered "Metal Gear: Solid" to avoid confusion.
Solid refered to that it's the 3rd game, in 3D, and references the character's code name.
