Without reading it, I assume the genre that King's Field has been going with. Which was pretty much awful because no one really knew how a player should control it and Demon Souls was also pretty much a dead IP on arrival in it's development.

No. There's nothing about Gehrman to suggest he's evil or malicious, if anything he's portrayed as pitiful and sympathetic. Gehrman is just a lonely old man who made a doll that resembles someone who meant something to him out of loneliness. Judging from the fact he cries out asking for Laurence or Master Willem to help him it's very likely he doesn't even know what became of Maria.
