Then it's as simple as dumping browserhax, cakesfw and related files on your sd card and using browserhax to run cakesfw. Cakes and gateway use the same emunand and run the same cias.
Also you might want NTR CFW. It stacks with whatever CFW you're using for extra features, including overclocking games with no specific N3DS support. And Themehax gives you boot time CFW without internet or CFW access

Any firmware. Updating shouldn't be an issue but it doesn't hurt to check. You might have to jump through a few hoops for online, eshop is all fine.

Can someone ELI5 the difference between CakesFW and rxTools? I opened my N3DS import to be pleasantly surprised that it was 9.1J.

Also: dont get New Super Mario Brois 2. The DS game is great but 2 is an awful rehash.

Fire Emblem Awakening, SMT IV, and SMT Soul Hackers are easy to recommend.

I did enjoy Castlevania Mirror of Fate but you're only going to play through it one time, and it isn't very long (6-7 hrs) so make sure you are comfortable spending the money.

Luigi's Mansion Dark of the Moon... I have mixed feelings on. On one hand it has a cool action/puzzle aspect, on the other hand, some of the puzzles feel a bit tedious and some of the boss fights are cheap and obnoxious enough that I wanted to quit.

Started screwin' around in Smash Brothers on 3ds... and well, its smash brothers. The controls are reasonable enough but it is a little hard to spot your character in 4player matches at times. Depends on how you like fighting games. But it is definitely a good looking game.
