I think TPP is super cool on a mechanical level.

The game has like a fucking ecosystem of its own. Everything feeds into everything else. The level of nuance in stuff like the economy and guard behaviour is fucking incredible.

Not to mention the optimisation and genius artstyle. Has anyone else noticed that the game is actually super low poly at times? It puts resources on stuff like the faces, but has this super subtle artstyle that gives off the impression that stuff is actually rounder than it is thanks to the lightning.

Every Metal Gear game was great up until 4. 4 was mediocre (which by Metal Gear standards is terrible) but Peace Walker, Revengeance, and Ground Zeroes were all great so I was fully expecting TPP to still be good.

I would rather play a good linear game (not that 4 is a good game, because it's not) than a shit open-world one. MGS3 is my favorite game of all time. The Phantom Pain is the biggest example of a pointless open world I've ever seen.

Imo the game fails at only one MAJOR point besides the story:
Level design
Its the reason the game never felt as intense as that first time you break into camp omega

The terrain is awful to move around too. One is never sure to what you can grab on to and slips on terrain that is just 5 inches high

MGSV would have been miles better with a series of GZ sized maps with several well designed missions in different areas, with different infiltration points and mission types. No, they don't. These were missing from GZ completely. The rain thing was especially weird as now they dont even cover themselves from the rain while sweeping, and the medic thing is completely missing because there's no mission control to be found in the two areas. Sure, they could call for a medic, but there's nowhere for the medic to come from. Rather than rectify this, its removed completely.

If it was well thought out, it would have worked. Cut africa, spend more time refining the areas in afghanistan. Make all the bases GZ tier, remove or improve all the pointless outposts, actually have stuff happening in the world (more patrols, civilians, more trucks etc), and it would have been fine.
MGS series relies on good level design, which is hard to do in an open world game, but not impossible.

Given the demos we saw and the basic idea behind the game anyone expecting a lot of good level design was delusional or naive. It's for this very reason that I suspected the game would be poorly balanced a year and a half ago.

Given the design problems 3, 4, and PW (and GZ to some extent) already had it was easy to see that MGSV's structure could be its downfall. You're right that it isn't impossible, but it was certainly unlikely.
