Its good, it has the only final boss i was never able to beat, it has some different endings, and going for the happiest one will be harder.

My reflexes are shot, I have the coordination of a snail missing 3/4 of a brain, and even I beat Cave Story's final boss after enough tries.

It's a great game, definitely one of my favorites.
The free version is all you need. Though I liked Cave Story+ just for the hard mode.

Like any game, it's subject.
But personally I love the precision platforming, the physics, the utility and feedback of each weapon, the graphic design, the music, the weapon level system, the bosses, the multiple playthroughs, the story, setting, characters, etc.
It's a really solid game, don't oversell it or anything mind you, but it poses a good challenge on a first playthrough, and for players interested enough they'll follow the cues and do things differently the next time around, and see what they missed out.

The only thing that comes to mind is the second step of saving curly, when you have to make that one jump into the safehouse in the waterway. But even that's not too difficult after a few tries.

Yeah, that one jump can fuck up your whole run.
Otherwise that's less trial and error, more just fucking up an observably risky jump.
Real trial and error is getting killed by very difficult to anticipate traps or hurdles, resulting in pattern memorisation. Mega Man 9 is trial and error.
