...Yes its good. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games always have really strong stories and characters, and the gameplay is usually a lot harder than normal Pokemon games. That said, some might find it a tad repetitive. Super Mystery Dungeon in particular also suffers from a really long tutorial, but once it gets going it gets REALLY good. To explain the challenge more, it forces you to prepare for dungeons beforehand and set aside the right items for a mission, because the game forces you to use items. In the tutorial alone you are pit up against a level 50 Salamence while you should be about level 12. Items are your friend, and that kind of challenge is hype as hell.

Considering it plays almost nothing like mainline Pokemon games (and thus Gold/Silver especially) I couldn't say. The only major problem you might have is not recognizing most of the Pokemon in it. I haven't played the newest gen (X/Y) and I played it and enjoyed it despite not recognizing some Pokemon, if that helps. I think a better question of whether or not you'd enjoy it is whether or not you like JRPGs, and if you've played and enjoyed titles like Etrian Odyssey.

I've finished Demon's Souls and Dark Souls but only played about 5 hours of Monster Hunter on Wii U. It just wasn't very compelling for me. If they removed all the Japanese gameplay elements (grinding, hours long shitty intro) it might be a good game but I just can't be bothered playing it.

They start easy but then the wall shows up and tends to fuck you. They get somewhat difficult, a lot of things can go wrong, but that's the nature of the series.
Some of the challenge dungeons especially in the first game are bullshittingly hard though (i.e. 99 floor dungeon solo where you start at level 1 with no items).
