They're some of the best games ever made, and they've got a lot of replayability thanks to mods and such.

Sure, but notice that the original devs won't get a single cent out of the sales anymore. Also, in case of the first game, SoC, pirating it actually is a valid choice, since you get a pure 1.0 version - that you can then patch to any version you want - which is handy in case of some big mods.

Consult this Starting Guide,
then see the /vg/'s huge Stalker General for more tips and links: >>>/vg/stalker

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.

Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area is quite boring.

Nobody plays STALKER's MP. It's all about atmospheric, kinda challenging SP adventuring, with some RP'ing.

All in all, it's stupid to judge every game by its MP features. I much rather pay for an enjoyable, well crafted and long-lasting singleplayer experience.

buy it, start with SoC, Play on Master, Don't get discouraged by the early game shit guns

SoC is great. Start is a bit slow due to the player starting with peashooters, but gets much better after you get proper automatic weapons.
CS is a shitty prequel with zero story relevance and focus on the buggy and boring faction system instead of exploration and quests. You won't miss anything by skipping it.
CoP is fantastic and a proper sequel to SoC. The story isn't as good as SoC's due to the player already knowing the main secrets of the Zone, but it has the best gameplay mechanics and side quests of the bunch.

tl;dr play SoC > skip CS > play CoP
All the games can be played unmodded, only CS is a buggy mess.
Remember to play on Master difficulty at it makes everyone, both you AND enemies die faster instead of being bullet sponges.
>>
>>321402437
Thats one problem that I have with sequels to Stalker. I really enjoyed the mystery element, exploration of the progressively more warped and hostile Hell on Earth that SoC offers.
After the mystery has been revealed...well, where do we go from there? Add another twist, retcon the first ending or keep playing even though we know what the Zone is about? Don't like any of those options.

Can you still mod the stalker games if you buy them via Steam?
>>
>>321403358
yes, although the ZoA mod needs to be reverted to an older version, i doubt you are gonna want to use it as its buggy as all hell and will kick your ass throughout the entire game and then some
>>
>>321402959
>or keep playing even though we know what the Zone is about?
That's sadly what both CS and CoP did. Helping the scientists in their quest to understand the Zone in CoP would be interesting, especially with their findings implying something in the Zone is consciously guiding the mutants and attempting to prevent people from researching it if the player didn't already know what exactly causes it. Or the whole military copters failing in their expedition thing being the game's main mystery when the anomalies changing places after a major blowout shit is basic knowledge from the previous games. At least CoP provided us with some sort of a good closure to the series.

>>
>>321403358
Yep. You just need to pay attention to what VERSION of the games you got, since some big mods are very picky about that.

>>321403456
ZoA is shit. AMK1.4 > all.
