FF1 had black and white mages, which is obvious. Due to the limited color palette of the NES they had to make the third mage either blue or red and picked the latter.
Later on they just threw in more colored mages for the heck of it. FFTA even has green mages.

Spears aren't really that good compared to other weapons.
Naked monk is the shit. Combine it with Dark Knight's Rage and Mystic Knight's Drain Weapon and it gets really broken.

I did the FFV Four Job Fiesta a couple years ago and although everybody shits on the Thief it was pretty fucking awesome for me.

They do both jobs adequately and aren't made of paper, also have physical damage for those high resistance/immune fucks.
Your party is unbalanced without both a white and black mage since their job is highly specific, red mage does both jobs albeit at lower intensity but has its own advantages.

Unfortunately they don't.
They're mediocre mages and mediocre fighters, but ultimately they're not good at anything.
There's really no reason to have them in your party instead of the specialized characters, that are much better at the roles they're supposed to fulfil.
