Granted, Max had an incredibly shitty life, but at least he wasn't a complete asshole to his men and really just recruited the best person for the job. Didn't care about nobility/ranks/nationality, he just brought on board anyone he thought was worth having on his side and would help his cause. It really explains Jaeger and Selvaria being there in the first place. But he didn't quite treat her like a normal person, mainly due to his intense jealousy of her inhuman powers and such.
But yes, he's kind of a whiny little bitch in the end about things and his country. He gave no after care/any kind of personal care to one of the most powerful things in the planet that was madly in love with him.
