I love that game to no end but FUCK sequels, let's have some standalone game for once and new IPs, for crying out loud.
Sleeping Dogs was mediocre. Combat aside it was boring and repetitive and the gameplay didn't help.
Triad Wars was even worse, I expected some sort of MMO and got the same boring shit plus a stupid management minigame, but always online.
Triad Wars took the combat from Sleeping Dogs, made it worse, and added shitty always online bullshit and some idiotic management system.
Shit wasn't even an MMO as far as I can tell, I literally never ran into a single other player.

Triad Wars was a glorified facebook game. It took the base mechanics from Sleeping Dogs without any of the story or heart, and reduced it down to running through the same bases over and over again.

It wasn't the "MMO" part that made it unsuccessful; it's that it was barely a MMO to start with. That's like calling Clash of Clans a MMO. You built bases and never interacted with other enforcers, the social functions were a joke, and even the most barebones MMO has better content.
Sleeping Dogs could have functioned as an online game if it was made competently instead of as a clear cashgrab where the entire system revolves around purchasing favor cards, and charging exorbitant prices for outfits.

With regard to Clash of Clans, while it makes millions per day the audience for that game and the audience interested in the Sleeping Dogs property are markedly different; mobile games are developed with short loop design principles so that users on portable devices can quickly log in, collect their resources, and log out. It's the "Starbucks line" principle of game development: can you actually complete a full session while waiting in line for coffee? Whereas the consumer looking for a Sleeping Dogs experience isn't looking for that short loop of gameplay, they're looking for more substance.
Not understanding the market is what fucked SE in the ass on this one.

The "it sold well, it must be good" is a fallacious argument that has been paraded for everything from movies to music to video games. It holds no weight.
In any case, again, Clash of Clans appeals to a certain audience, for a specific set of devices, which is why it makes millions. The formula cannot be readily adapted to PC or console games and be expected to become an instant hit. It is baffling how some developers have absolutely no grasp of demographics or psychographics.

Clash of Clans came out at a perfect time to tackle the mobile gaming market, it's a successful game but that doesn't automatically make it "good". The Potato industry makes billions, do I have to like potatoes? No. Does this make potatoes good? No, it makes them successful; it's not the same thing.
