4 is literally the classic castlevania for people who don't actually like castlevania games, go play Megaman X if you hate the core gameplay so much
4 has some of the worst bosses, is far too easy while having some of the cheapest trial and error based difficulty in the franchise in the last couple of stages. Let's not talk about the 8 way whip and lack of commited jumps.
Castlevania 1 is by far the best in terms of level design and gameplay. It is also the best 2D game of all time. 3 would be a contender but it also suffers from certain 'cheap' areas, but other areas make up for it, unlike 4 which really only has atmosphere going for it.
