Happy birthday, /v/.

This is Mana-sama speaking.

I'll grant you eternal beauty if you can recommend a game with good gothic aesthetics to me.

Okay, it's called "Gothic", but it's got awful aesthetics and sense of fashion.

I shall not grant you eternal beauty to you.

Style Savvy 3. Although it only extends to the clothing you can wear.

If I remember correctly it actually has an Angelic Pretty print apart from gothic clothes galore

Bayonetta

Even some of the music reminds me of Malice Mizer music (bara no seidou-era)

I don't think i've EVER seen a thread about visual kei on 4chan.

It's like no one ever gives a shit about it, it's only Kpop an Idol shit here.
>>
>>321283908
Now that you mention it, it is strange.

Is visual kei still a thing? I kinda followed Malice Mizer and Moi Dix Mois, but that was 10-15 years ago.

VK's golden days in the west are long gone, those were the late 90s/early 00s.
In the mid to late 00s, VK got quite a lot of exposure in the west, but sadly it was from the wrong bands. Malice Mizer was already disbanded, and Moi dix Mois only toured briefly in Europe a few times, and their public were generally goths, not weebs.

The weebs, who were the majority, consumed shit like Gazette, An Cafe and Miyavi, which are all rather rubbish and garbage compared to the actual good visual kei from the 80s and early 90s.
This lead to majority of people thinking Visual kei = those millennial bands, instead of actual good ones like Luna Sea, Buck-Tick or Kuroyume.

Dir en grey became sort of popular in america, but they're not visual kei anymore since the early 00s, and most of the fanbase is divided between those who like their VK era, and those who like their newer (true patricians like both eras, since Macabre and Uroboros are their best albums, and they're both from different eras).

Anyway, yeah, VK got a bad reputation in the west and it couldn't recover.
And in Japan it also hasn't been as popular as it was in the 90s, the visual boom of Shazna, Malice Mizer and La'cryma Christi could never be replicated. Gazette and Miyavi ain't got shit on 90s Mizer.

Have you been on /cgl/? It mostly has been focused on fashion, but there has been a slight revival in the western vk scene and occasionally in threads it will get to music gossip and conversation. Like the threads aren't perfect but its a fun thing to have.

There were, but not much. Visual Kei overall is a dying genre due to boyband syndrome going full speed ahead.
>>
>>321284431
>boyband syndrome

What? Are there even other popular boybands than One Direction? Or are you just talking about Japan?

Asia in general, but sympathisers in the West too. As someone above stated, it's all about kpop. For girls it's hot guys dancing and being perfect, for girls it's cute girls doing really sexy dance moves that often get banned from their choreography. All the while making mediocre shit that wouldn't last if it weren't for the complete automisation of bringing out numerous singles, albums, special editions so the appeal doesn't waver.

Welp I didn't know VK was in such a dire state.

Thank you for your in-depth replys. Versailles is also pretty good btw

Alright /v/, which good VK bands can you recommend? I'm and oldfag so I mostly listen to the classics and some indie from the late 90s, but I'm open to recommendations of newer bands. I've tried to listen to stuff like Mejibray, Jupiter and some other popular current VK bands, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

here's some bands I like

Pierrot

Jeanne da Arc

Raphael

and of course, Malice Mizer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrGwptv_2Yw

Just my favorite major acts, I have lots of indie favorites too

>>321285095
So was Kagrra,, but people keep fucking dying out there.
>>
>>321285316
Jeez, uh. Buck-tick for the pop-rock, Ali Project for the pop-experimental, Yousei Teikoku for the metal shit, uh.

God, I can never answer these questions.
>>
>>321285776

Buck-Tick is old as shit dude, they're one of my favorites too, but they're like the fathers of visual kei along with the likes of X and COLOR.

I know Ali Project, will try Yousei!

You should try the Legacy of Kain games, Soul Reaver 2 in particular, Mana-sama. Then DarksiderS 1 and 2.
>>

Midori is also a great band if you're looking for some punk-jazz, had great times listening to them.

Then there's the older works of LM.C and An Cafe for some happy rock, aaaaand Nightmare has some good albums too.

Last but not least there's a Eurobeat-esque performer named Kradness who makes a living of singing in Vocaloid songs. His upbeat and energetic voice makes that worth a listen.

For a more classic Visual Kei experience there's also Ayabie and Kagrra,.

Wish I had more to recommend but my mind is empty due to Christmas.
