I have no idea how to transition from developing desktop apps (WPF MVVM) and web apps (ASP.NET MVC) to developing games. Since my most known language is C# (7 years) it seems Unity would be the go to SDK, but I've watched a few tutorials and left cringing at their content for various reasons...
Are there any good resources for learning Unity for people who are already programmers?
>>
The other day I had a burst of inspiration to try starting to make a game and now it's gone. So the game's not coming along very well.

Just download the editor for free and get going.
Its not like its complicated or something. You can attach C# scripts to game objects and shit. Easy Peasy.

Most code revolves around setting up defenitions and if, else, while. Anything else just requires logic and simple math.

Here's a dumb question: how does UE4 handle 2D games? I'm not necessarily concerned if it's the "best" choice, just whether it will be adequate and not get in the way.

I ask because I'm kind of interested in learning UE4 (I have some experience with other engines already), but I'm not really feeling like doing a 3D game right now. If it handles 2D decently I might just start doing something with that just for the learning experience.

The game is done, after about a year in development. I may not have hit my deadline if not for these types of threads reminding me to work on it, so I put credit where credit is due.

The game is somewhat Christmas-themed, so I made the game "Pay what you want" until after Christmas is over. If you're interested you can download it now and try it out for yourself.

Store Page: http://codybean1.itch.io/christmas-satellite

Greenlight: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=551525979

Pic related is apart of the credits. I don't care if it's more than one person who did this. You all deserve credit for encouraging creative productivity. Keep up the great work everyone. I didn't post progress all to much throughout development, but I've been in every one I see.

I'm making a slightly different game then Banished where combat will be involved.

At the moment I'm working on a survival gameplay mod where you will attempt to survive, not only from your own incompetence but also enemies and quests that will attempt to strecth you tin. And the buildings won't have any randomness to their collecting, so you will always be able to plan too perfection.

But to avoid people finding "perfect" layouts builings will have a upgrade path and passive upgrades. So it will always depend on other circumstances.

how hard is it to make a game if i have no knowledge in computers whatsoever and studied philosophy?

>>
>>321273984
Learn how computers handle math, take some free courses on coding and write some basic stuff. Start with either C++ or C#. GameMaker is pretty simple, but very limited. Unreal eats newbies on breakfast. Unity isn't that good, but friendly enough. Depending on how willing to learn you are, and if you're not one of those faggots who piss themselves when they hear the words "Calculate the X" and "Basic Function", in several months you should be able to make some simple logic game. And it will be quite satisfying to make.

Similar. It's like Bejeweled with a full screen of gems, only you're able to swap gems positioned anywhere on the grid and set off chains of gems manually. The timer for each turn increases in speed the higher level you are, until the timer reaches a threshold and resets.

>Any tips/good resources for a newbie trying to make one of his own?

If you have Game Maker there's a series of video tutorials that starts here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mu3PQqbQBM

If you have Construct 2 you can start here with a series of text/image tutorials - http://gamedevelopment.tutsplus.com/tutorials/make-a-match-3-game-in-construct-2-the-basics--gamedev-8071

As for Unity I haven't used it in-depth but this helped me out, although you can still google "unity match 3 tutorial" if you're having trouble - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5jPdiwOKKQ

Any of these will let you create a Bejeweled-style game, which you can use as the base for your own style of puzzle game.

I recently just found out how easy Game Maker is and came up with this plan:

>write game with earthbound-type humor and cutesy designs
>code intro and hub area with a little tutorial area with programmer art as placeholders
>use money saved up to hire pixel artist to make the game look pretty as well as make logos etc.
>hire musician known for making catchy tunes to create a few songs for the game so far as well
>code basic website with html skills
>find out how much it'll cost to get pixel art and music done for the whole game
>launch a Kickstarter asking for the combination of the two quotes plus barely enough to live for two years
>use family's viral marketing company to make the kickstarter known
>release what you have so far as a demo to increase credibility
>research what press sites usually cover pixelshit games of this nature and send them press kits
>then send press kits to the more mainstream ones
>slowly log onto the 10+ reddit accounts that i have been posting on for three months ahead of the kickstarter and use them to further market the game
>make sure to make rewards non-physical so i don't have to deal with that shit
>once kickstarter succeeds immediately pay out the pixel artist and sound guy to start on the stuff
>already have most shit coded from demo so all have to do is create the areas, cutscenes, and moves
>use family marketing company again when the game releases and rake in dosh

Chance of success?

View, then Controller, then Model.

Work on your world World first. Character models will need to fit the world. Setting is decided by the world.

Then hash up a controller with stubs, (this would be where your setting comes in) and a basic model. (this is where your story comes in.) Build up both and you're done.

For a 2D game you might consider using Godot or Game Maker. Unreal is an overkill IMO, will be a painful road
