Can anyone give me some gearing tips and tips in general? Like what stats are the most important?
I've read the manual and still am confused about some things. I'm on chapter 5, trying to level up and gear up to kill that thing.

You need to balance exploring and story. You should be fine as prime placement is more end game. By chapter 6 I had 8k though. For gear just see what increases your attack and defense. Once you understand the game more youll know what you want. You STILL need to unlock two features by progressing the story.

I just got this game today as an early christmas gift...
Coming from alot of monster hunter/action rpg's. this threw me for a loop.. The game seems so action set. my face was a mix of horror and confusion when i fought a level 5 pig, that just dashed into a wall in the opposite direction of where i was standing, and i got hit for half my hp.
I just don't understand... the game feels so perfect for active combat, dodging, and counter attacking. I can't seem to get in the mindset of stacking agility to evade attacks, when i'm seeing the enemy clearly attacking in the wrong direction and still hitting me. It was fine in turn based games. Or games where you didnt get to free roam during battle. But this game feel's like an action rpg game, with strategy rpg elements. Aside from attacking bodyparts there doesnt seem to be any purpose to moving around in game during fights. How can i get in the right mindset to enjoy this game?

You'll get the right feel for it, the movement doesn't matter much but certain classes benefit a lot from positioning and sometimes distance to enemies matters. The strategy is mostly managing cooldowns and chaining arts together. It's honestly really awkward and it took me up to the 4th boss fight to get a hang for it. I didn't know what soul voices were until chapter 5.

The past few mmo's have either been action combat, or have some elements of dodging, IE even in ragnarok if someone does an AoE if you dont step on it you dont get hit. There's the bit to make the Flight Module and the bit to make the super weapon, but I guess that comes off more as an engineering obsession that a skell one, they just both happen to be skell attachments.
It makes sense why they dropped it though, they have Alexa for filling that role, they really didn't need two characters defined by the exact same thing.
They do have some pretty good battle dialogue together though.

I'm pretty sure you actually have to make a correct dialogue choice way back in one of her earlier quests, the one where there's a tree clan member confronting her while her men are missing, in order for the zerg rush to end in the best possible way.

The good news for you is that all that you get out of H.B. and Boze's quest chains are level 30 Skells, which aren't worth anything in the long run.

Which to get affinity for? For...what? To progress the game, Elma and Lin are necessary. And Gwin a little. You can miss stuff fromLao's h2hbut that doesn't matter. ALL character's have at least 3 quests that involve them.
First: the mission you recruit them from. Does not require affinity.
Second: the affinity quest that requires them in your party and usually 1-2 Hearts. Completion gives you their 1st unique art.
Third: the affinity quest that requires them in your party and usually 3-4 Hearts. A continuation of the last affinity quest, normally. Completion gives you their final unique art.
Some affinity quests restrict who you can take, all need you to be past certain chapters in the story,etc.
There are also 5 Heart-to-Hearts for each character. First requires 1 heart, 2nd requires 2 hearts, etc. They CANNOT be in your party to appear in their new spot (they will not be in their normal "recruit me" spot). May depend on time of day, may depend on if you have a cat or dog as your barracks pet. Must be done in order.
Boze sucks, but H.B. is fantastic, btw.

It's easier to farm for parts by accepting the Squad missions in the barracks that have either him or Telethia Plume, break all the parts you can, then abandon the mission. You'll get a couple hundred tickets you can trade for stuff.

No. The endgame katanas are the only weapons that are super-unique and twice more powerful than anything you can buy or find otherwise. Seeing as photon saber-users only have the Beam Boost skill, you're also kinda relegated to using only beam type, too. You, personally, can use anything (Ether being the best for the 50% + 100% Ether boost skills) as there are "Boost" skills for each element. Gravity is p great.
All other weapons are generic Ultra-Series.

Another thing is that during this quest, while locating the tree expert, you can talk to Sullivan to get affinity links to Ivory and Caroline
This isn't actually good for ANYTHING because the affinity chart is entirely worthless, but I'm pretty sure it's the only way to make these links show up.
It's weird how meticulous they were about giving NPCs unique dialogue during different parts of the game when most of the time it amounts to fuck all.
