I haven't played 3, fuck me, I still liked 4 the most when I played it because of the story, the last dungeon and the music in general, U2 is fucking good but it lacked....something, I guess I liked the subclasses a lot more than grimoires.
U1 is good too but the grimoire system in that one is SHIT, but the last battle is the best of the games I've played, dat music.
MD was fun at first but it became ridiculous, the FOE or whatever was bothersome as shit, dungeons were too fucking long, AI was stupid and somehow the battles took longer in real time than in the actual EO games, overall, I don't reccomend it unless you TRULY love EO and MD, hell, the story wasn't good either and the bosses were a fucking joke, broken classes too.

How is EO2: Untold? I never played the first EOU but I might try the second one out.
Do you miss out on anything if you don't do the Story Mode? I'd kind of rather just play Classic Mode right away because I never played the original EO2, but I remember there were things you could unlock in Story Mode for Classic Mode in the previous EOU so I thought I'd check.

I like it. EO is an experience I'll never forget. I love the idea of just taking your party members out and just killing monsters. It gave me an opportunity to give some story and personality to my characters.
The minimal story kind of helps since you can weave your party's narrative into the larger story pretty seamlessly without losing the immersion.
Grimoires (in Untold 2) were cool. It gave it another depth to customization outside of skill points. Of course, Sub-Classing was pretty cool too since it gave a character almost a whole new set of toys to play with.

Nothing's really random, but they'll fuck you up. Sometimes you'll find an event and if you pick the wrong choice you get ambushed by a shitload of monsters or something. One of the biggest gimmicks in the series is huge boss monsters that wander the map and are generally too powerful for you to defeat without leveling or a ton of preparation. They move through the map during combat as well, so they can make things pretty intense.

Just play the game. If you're having too much trouble check out your party composition. Make sure you have some synergy between members, make sure you're not going to overboard on support that you can't deal enough damage, etc. This early in the game you probably don't have enough skills for any of that stuff to make much of a difference, though.

Stay very close to the beginning of the first dungeon until you get a couple levels and buy a full set of starter equipment for everyone. Remember to spend your skill points (you start with 3). Draw your map so you know how to dodge FOEs. Always keep an Ariadne Thread on you as soon as they become available. Save every time you go to town.

Nightseeker, auto-throw, sleep throw. With the Nightseeker's insane speed, you won't get ambushed and you'll have a pretty decent dodge rate.

I started with the original game and nearly ripped my hair out, but ended up beating it and reaching the bonus boss.
2 takes what made 1 beatable and removes it, and replaces it with revenge hexers. Still a fun game.
3 is by far and away the high point for the series, featuring the best dungeons, the best music and the most even difficulty curve. Fuck, even the story ain't terrible.
4's the worst of the non-remakes, simply because of how easy it feels, for lack of a better word. The only time I felt there was a bit of a challenge was the bonus stratum, and even then the only issues I had were with Petaloids, and they're par for the course for "Fuck You" in an EO game.
I despise EO1U with a passion, simply for adding a shit story mode that spoils the biggest twist in the game in the opening minutes, and making the game even easier than 4 with Grimoire abuse.
I'm going to be playing EO2U soon, so I can't give a rating.
I don't think there's ever been a better "first dungeon" theme in any RPG.

Generation Xth is a Wizardry clone with modern touches on PC, first game was translated, though I think Operation Abyss on the Vita was its remake.
