Konami intentionally bombed the game because they wanted to get out of making AAA titles, and since the head CEO literally hates Kojima, he tried to take him down too in one fell swoop.
Not to say Kojima is some "great story teller" or anything like that, just that the reason MGS5 was so bad is because the CEO wanted to ruin it all on purpose, as well as a personal vendetta against Kojima who was the biggest person against the changes that are being made throughout Konami.
(Pretty fucking obvious since Konami wouldn't even allow him to pick up a fucking award because of how petty the CEO is)

I've beaten it multiple times and really enjoy it, but you can't honestly believe that. The game is hard to look at, save for the lighting and art direction in SOME areas. All the character models look bad (those draconids lol) and are animated poorly to boot. The combat isn't that interesting and the timing is not that hard to figure out (it shows you exactly when to click). And all on top of that as soon as you get through Act 1 you are thrown into the absolute worst part of the game for the next 20 hours or so; Vizima looks like shit, all the quests are boring as hell, and the swamps are simply not fun to be in at all.
It is honestly very easy to see why others get turned off by it. It's unfortunate, because the other chapters (especially 4) are really good and the combat gets better once you have more potions and other devices to use. But we're talking about some of the dullest gaming possible to get to it.
Never played any witcher games, do I need to play the first 2 to understand the story, or can I just skip to 3?
