We already have three Twilight Princess characters on the roster (who should have been Skyward Sword characters, but Sakurai hates Zelda and couldn't be bothered to update them like he did with the rest of the characters), a third Link who happens to be a wolf wouldn't help sell anything.
I'm a little miffed at Corrin, but he IS from a different FE game, same as how Marth, Roy, Ike, and Robin are from different FE games, so it's excusable, and this time we have a transformer half-dragon with lance limbs and water attacks who barely uses his sword. And Bayo is always a welcome addition.
One thing I do find weird is that Sakurai didn't take this opportunity to bring back all the veterans that didn't make it that can work. He said himself he hates cutting characters because he knows they all have fans, and what better way to make those fans happy? King K.Rool was hands down the number one pick in Japan and US at least. Back in Brawl era it was Krystal Japan wanted, but in the Ballot polls they wanted K.Rool just as much as us.
People think they don't know him, but they don't realize the DKC cg series was hella popular in japan, they even got toy playsets of it

Lucina didn't steal a spot from anyone, she was a cosmetic alt for Marth that Sakurai decided to split into her own, probably so that people would not think she was "Female Marth" in the same vein as "Boy Robin" and "Girl Robin". The work on Lucy was already done, she just got some mild tweaking. It also helped that people loved Awakening at the time.
Roy was highly requested even with 4 FE reps already in the game, and the confirmation of his return, to most people, was met with happiness because of Melee nostalgia. Again, it was not about the reps here. Just happened to be that the one vet people REALLY wanted back was Roy. He'd already done Mewtwo and Doc so i guess he figured "hey why not". and he did at least distinguish his moves from Marth.
Fates is the new hotness right now, SF Zero was delayed so Wolf would likely just remind people of that, K.Rool would be exciting but ultimately pretty dull in terms of moveset (compared to the three we got at least)
it just happened to be that FE has a lot of popular characters. Marth and Roy mainly through Smash, but Ike, Lucy, Robin, and Corrin have become popular among FE fans
