I played Shadowrun: Dragonfall a month ago, and it scratched that particular itch very well

it's $5 on steam right now. it's not perfect, but I'd definitely recommend it at that price
the writing is the best part of the game. your team members have traits like greedy, proud, pious, racist and whatnot and their morale goes up or down depending on how you resolve situations that arise

Hard West is by far worse than Expeditions.
The concept is rock solid, the combat is engaging enough, but the "world map" part is just so fucking dry its hard to recommend because you'll spend most of your time there.
People who think pegasus knights are shit haven't played any of the Akaneia games

There's nothing fun about RNG combat. Most of the games listed in this thread are smart enough to apply a system that reduces or increases damage taken based on various factors, instead of making damage pure dice rolls.
XCom games have a great setting, great atmosphere, good creature / character design, adequate lore (gets goofy at times but so does every 1940s-like Tale of Super Science!, so it's fine).
But the combat is pure dicks; it's bad game design if you do everything right and still don't win.

There are lots of different classes and abilities to really make you think about tactics, just rushing forward will get you killed. It's not a game you could play for hundreds of hours but it definitely keeps you entertained for the duration of the story and makes you excited to see how they improve with the second game.

Pilot skills are the strongest determining factor in the Arena. Take off all skills but maybe one, and you can use the most overpowered Wanzer you want and still have a huge payout for victory.
