I'm not gonna say it's dead but I own a Wii U and it's nowhere near as good as the Wii. Then again the Wii was mainly good because it was so easy to bypass, play games from HDD no problems and have a good ol' time, Wii had a lot of games that were okay but nowhere near worth $50-60 (or even $15-20 they cost used) so you got your money out of it by pirating.
Wii U doesn't have this convenience so even if you bought it for Smash, and maybe Splatoon, it's still going to slowly die.
PSP/Vita are similar.
Honestly PSP had a ton of good hidden good games, but almost no hidden GEMS, which wasn't a problem of worth because of it's emulation capabilities. If the PSP wasn't so awesome when it came to emulation it would have not been able to compete with DS-Lite's fierce lineup.
3DS is also weak.

And they ended up being great years. 2015 looked pretty lackluster going into it and guess what? There *might* be a flagship Mario game since the Wii U doesn't have one yet, but I think it simply won't be getting one since it failed so bad. Pikmin 4 *might* be for Wii U but I think that's equally unlikely at this point. It's not like Miyamoto would have announced it for NX in that interview since they want the public to forget that NX exists. I'm sure there will be more HD remasters, though. You sound like the type of person who would enjoy those.

3DS is an 'added gimmick' not a forced one, just like the Wii didn't force the Wii controller on you outside of specific games, you had the option of Gamecube controller or Wii controller add-ons, and so did third party developers have the option to work based on that.
3D is a gimmick but it's not necessary to like the gimmick to justify buying it and it's not necessary for every game or even the majority of them, in fact pretty much every game can be played without it.
