I want to get into the Ys series and don't know where to start. I checked out steam and there seem to be Ys I & II, Ys: The Oath in Felghana (which is from what I've gathered a remake of Ys III), Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim and Ys Origin.
So my questions are:
Which game should I start with?
Is it ok to skip the 2D ones (Ys I & II)?
In what order should I play them?
Does this matter story-wise?
Each game is semi-self contained. Technically you're better off playing them in order, but it shouln't matter that much. Bear in mind that many of the games have radically different gameplay and some of them may be difficult to get into, the bumpercar combat of Ys I and II for example. I started with Ys Origin, and although it's a prequel I'd still say it's a good point to start.

Thanks for the input, It seems like I'm going to check out Origin then.

The story order doesn't really matter at all other than you'll appreciate Felghana, Seven, and Celceta a bit more if you play Napishtim first and you'll appreciate Origin more if you play I & II first.

>Which game should I start with?
Ys I & II
>Is it ok to skip the 2D ones (Ys I & II)?
No

See the picture
>Does this matter story-wise?
Not really

>Which game should I start with?
Start with Felghana. As a suggestion, play your first play through on hard.
>Is it ok to skip the 2D ones (Ys I & II)?
Yes but you should try them eventually.
>In what order should I play them?
Felghana, Origin(it's a prequel to 1 and 2. Some things maybe spoiled but it's not a big deal), Seven, Napishtim, 1 and 2, the rest. Memories of Celceta is only on the vita, so if you have one get the game.
>Does this matter story-wise?
No, but you will notice little things here and there.

Start with Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles for PSP.
Just be aware that it's very VERY different from anything you might have played before. You have to bump into enemies to kill them, and if you're not careful when doing it they also get a hit on you, which is almost certain is a 1hitKO in the beginning.

>Start with Ys 1 & 2
This. Doesn't matter is it's on PSP or PC, just do it. And play it BEFORE Orign, or it'll be spoiler land Orign for you.
They are also the easiest to complete on the hardest difficulty. Then move to the 3D ones.

>Napishtim not mentioned at all in infobar at the bottom
>>321183617
Pic is outdated anyway
Play 1, 2, Origin, Oath then Napishtim.

>playing napishtim last
make sure you play on at least hard or you aren't playing the game properly.
turn off double tap to dash and turn always dash on.

it's the sixth game.
If you want maximum enjoyment out of Origin, play Ys I, II, then Napishtim before Origin. Although Napishtim is not as important compared to I and II, just some minor references to things mentioned in Napishtim.

Try Ysvi first.
>>321185341
And Oath is the seventh and Origin is the eighth. What is your point?
>>321185495
Oath is a remake of 3 and Origin is a prequel intended to be played after I & II.
I advise looking at some gameplay footage of 1 and 2 before deciding whether to play them, as they differ significantly from the later games and remakes. Personally I adore Oath in Felghana and Origins but could not get into 1 & 2 at all

None of this explains why you believe that napishtim should be played last.
Personally I think you should play Napishtim before playing Origin because as >>321185417 already pointed out, Origin has a few Napishtim references in it.
