Is skylake just a meme or is it worth spending more money on than a i7 4790k build?
>>
>>321163534
i5 vs i7 is a pretty big debate. Usually most people are completely fine with the power and performance of an i5. Certain enthusiast players can certainly go for the i7 but for the most part many games don't fully utilize the i5 let alone the i7. For all intents and purposes that isn't heavy video rendering, editing and what not the i5 will fill the purpose of most all your nears
>>
>>321163534
it's a overpriced meme
>>
>out of stock constantly
>supposed to be priced $350

Depends.

On one hand, if you get a 1151 socket motherboard, you will be good to go for at least a few more years if you want to just upgrade the CPU. You also have access do DDR4 memory, which is slowly going down in price and more practical then it was a few months ago.

On the other, i7-4790k is honestly overkill at this point for any current game (and probably anything within the next 5 years) and is not that far behind Skylake. Problem is, you are stuck on LGA 1150 and DDR3 (Which isn't bad, but limits the possibility of a cheap upgrade).

Personally? I have a i7-4790k, but I also did my build right before Skylake came out. Granted, it is still a damn fine processor and overclocked it is a absolute beast all around.

i7-920 master race here

with a heavy factory OC 750ti

I play all games at ultra 1080p. modern games @ about 30fps
>>
>>321163957
Correction, there are DDR4 motherboards for LGA 1150, but you are still cut off from CPU upgrades. Didn't even realize they started to do DDR4 for 1150.

I'm upgrading to a FX6300 from a Phenom II x4. To be honest I'm not concerned about getting 70-90fps averages as long as I'm at 60fps or close. I've yet to even need to use my HD7950 with my HD6970 eating threw my backlog of games without breaking a sweat

That's not much of an upgrade. I wouldn't be too surprised if some games saw a FPS drop.

My justification for not getting skylake when I had the opportunity to was that I already had 16GB of DDR3 ram. I didn't to buy all that shit all over again at a higher price

That and the speeds of DDR4 ram are barely meeting DDR3 ram already so you would have to plan to upgrade those existing ram again.

Also make sure what you want to do is worth getting an i7 for. I find that all of my games performed the same with an i7-4790k coming from an i5-4690k. i5 is good for just straight up gaming but when you want to do stuff like broadcasting your games or video editing/rendering, an i7 would be perfect for that.

>>321165107
Old Source games easily run at or above 120fps 1080P max settings. I'm just too much of a poor fag to have bought a 120fps monitor in the last 5 years. I'm quite happy with 1080P 60fps
>>
>>321165172
Its an upgrade from my Opteron 1385 running @3.3GHz I picked up unused for $40

You clearly already have the power to hit 60 fps but you chose to hit ultra graphix instead. Literally worse than a consolfag, at least they don't have a choice.

Seriously the Phenom IIx4 ran Skyrim at second to highest shadow settings 1080P 60fps. My HD6970 ate through hir res texture mods like it didn't give any fucks. 1080P 60fps no AA everything else but shadow quality maxed out .

Shadow quality hits the CPU in Skyrim for some reason

well unlike you I dont fall for memes. anything above stable 25fps is playable.

60fps makes things look strange. not heavy or cinematic

40 is the sweet spot

It's like you want to waste money.

Xeon
>equal performance
>cheaper
>more memory bandwidth
>more stable
>SMP capable
>ECC
>more L3 cache

Just grab a E3-12xx, 1151 socket board and you're good to go.
>>
The only game I know of that might require an i7 is Star Citizen but it won't be finished for another two years.
>>
>>321165806
I wonder what are 240 fps to you.
>>
>>321165806
60 is a sweet spot for smooth gameplay without requiring a tremendous amount of performance. Its not like 60fps is necessary for all game types.

Twitchy games (FPS and TPS) require 60fps or better.
Slower games (Witcher series, Bethesda games, platformers) only really need 30-60fps.
RTS is fine above 20fps
>>
>>321166064
>equal performance
Nope, lower clocked
>cheaper
Yep, quite a bit
>more memory bandwidth
Is it quadchannel or something?
>more stable
Pointless in a typical desktop
>SMP capable
Ditto

Ditto, ECC memory is more expensive to boot
>more L3 cache
Kinda nice

camera moves too fast. and character movement is unnatural. sort of it gets the cheap soap opera look.

there is a reason why vsync exists.

try playing max payne 3 at 120fps. shit's weird

you are braindead and brainwashed by the high fps meme

fps should NEVER surpass 40fps

also SOME games are better at 720p coz the screen is not zoomed out

I know Intel is better but benchmarks have proven for years now that the i3 is often equal to both the i5 and i7 in most games and the ones that benefit from an i5 almost always perform identically to the i7. I think Crysis 3 might be the only game to benefit in any meaningful way from an i7

i shall something that might cause some problems

many 360/ps3 ports are better played at 720p since they were designed for that resolution

at 1080p everything on screen becomes very small including text

25fps is shit, 60fps does not look strange.

30fps is playable, but 40 is worse than 30 due to frame timing with your refresh rate, this is either bait or you're a complete spastic
>>
>>321167082
i know about the screen tearing issue. i enjoy it (unlike your mum) coz its a reminder that i got a beast pc. i7 with 12gb ram and heavy oc 750ti.
>>
>>321165796
A 750ti in a prebuilt can handle skyrim, fag. That game is not intensive.
>>
>>321166935

>>
>>321167324
What the fuck does that even mean? You sit on a couch and play from your TV? Move the couch closer.
>>
>>321167219
frame timing =/= screen tearing

something moving from x-40 wil make your game for the lack of a better word "stutter", so you're best capping your game at 30fps at that point

The GTX750Ti is slightly outperformed by the GTX580 so it is about equal to my HD6970 from 2010. My GPU isn't even GCN its Terrascale.

Older GPUs like the GTX285 (at one point as expensive as a GTX980) struggle with Skyrim

Skyrim is a year newer than my old PC. I was pretty happy that it ran as well as it did

>>
Although I would have rather gone with the old Phenom II x6 but unused chips are going for $150+
>>
>>321163534
Not really.

There is slight increase of performance but just like last gen, 99% of games are GPU bound, so you'll do better spending more money on GPU especially since you're buying 8 core anyway.
>>
Currenlty running an i5 6600K @4,6GHz and no, it's not worth it at this point and probably won't be worth it next year either, provided the old processors drop a bit in price again.
Then again I'm not the best reference as I did not only go with the OC'd Skylake but also went full retard and bought a 1440p@144Hz screen because it was on sale at Amazon. Scrolling through /v/ was never more smooth shame there are no games to play
>>

Maybe. It's one of the few upcoming games I'm looking forward to but there's a lot that can go wrong when making ports.

Pretty sure that Nvidia's pascal will also require these, probably newer motherboards since they'll require NVLink/PCI-E 4.

Those motherboards should be built around Skylake, therefore, if you plan on getting a Pascal GPU, you'll need a Skylake CPU (at least) and therefore a suited motherboard and DDR4 RAM.

I think there was some tech news indicating AMD has pushed ZEN's release back to 2017.

>>
>>321173851

It's because AMD is way behind and Intel has been focusing most of their efforts on mobile, ie making shit more efficient rather than more powerful. MacBooks and Surfaces are probably much more important to their bottom line than hardcore PC gaming rigs at this point.
