Which is the best modern 4X game?
I'd like to get one in the Steam sale, but I don't really know what's good.
Endless Legend has some really good ideas, but it really doesn't have enough to it to make it last past a couple games
Civ V is still the best bet

>modern 4X
None of them. They are all lacking something that earlier ones had, normally many somethings.

such as?

Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes

civ v is cool.
better with friends.
I enjoy plotting, and betrayals.

Really? I remember hearing about it but completely forgot about it until I saw it in this thread.
It's -66% right now. Was thinking about getting it.

Get it
Endless Legend is based
>>321165682
>pros-
the hero unit shit is real cool, the way you use them in military or cities
the unit upgrade system
siege system and reinforcements
>cons-
tile layout and city planning is a fucking mess
the quest system is too simple. "kill this group" or "give this number of resource"
not enough control over battles, ai takes over at times in combat
the tech tree is completely fucked
diplomacy is heavily discouraged, you'll play completely isolated unless you are those dragon fuckers
It's some cool ideas, but executed poorly
AoW3 is very fun albeit highly focused on the combat. Its 4xg lite

If you don't have Civ V, get that. It just has the most content and a huge amount of mods you can use on it.
Endless Legend is great too, or Age of Wonders 3, if you want a bit more of a fantasy feel

>4X
It feels very much like the HoMM games, and I wouldn't call those 4X.
>>321171078
Eh, sure, it still ends up playing a lot like 4X games tend to

Personally, Sins of a Solar Empire is my favorite x4. Being real-time, t's definitely a step away from the usual, but I found that it did its job extremely well.
I love Civ 5 and looking for a new Strategy game that feels similar to it. What would be the closest to that?
what about beyond earth?
>>321171823
no
just no
>>321161745
Dominions 4. It is a bit loose on the 4x side as it mostly focuses on fighting, and doesn't look modern (sprite graphics from early 00's), but it has crazy depth.
>>321171823
not as bad as people say, they're fixing shit with DLC. You're better off waiting for the finale DLC to be released and buy it all bundled together.
>>321171814
Older civs, or galciv.
My fav is Distant Worlds.
4X are a weird genre, there are quite a few of them but usually only one or two will stick with you.
>>321165787

In the end I got it.
I've never been a very hardcore 4X player at all. In fact, I'm as casual a 4X player as can be, given that I've only ever played Civ games (I stick to RTS and Grand Strategy mostly). I doubt the lack of depth is gonna bother me much when I've been wallowing in a puddle so far.
Also,
>diplomacy is heavily discouraged, you'll play completely isolated unless you are those dragon fuckers
Diplomacy in Civ always seemed really weird anyway. Never did any of it there either.

The thing is the 4X genre doesn't go very deep anyway. Outside of maybe Distant Worlds and Aurora but those are outliners.
Civ V and Endless Legend are good enough that I would recommend eventually getting both games. However, if you only have enough to get one game right now, get Civ V and wait for EL to drop to 75% off, hopefully during the summer sale.
Civ V, I'm having a blast with the 43 civ and YNAEMP mods
Really enjoying Distant Worlds Universe. The ship design aspect reminds me of the Space Empires series.

>over a year since release

It looks good, but I'm way too much of a penny-pincher to spend $30 on it.

Endless Space vs Legend, which one is better?

Legend, definitely.
Space lacks... character. You spend nearly all your time looking at the very clean menus and map screen. The game feels very sterile, and as a result I thought it got boring rather quickly.

Pirate it first to see if it's worth your money while waiting for a sale.

Civ V is alright, though if you want something more complex in its mechanics, Europa Universalis IV would technically be considered 4X, but only as a select number of nations.
