Nah, they were wrong. And they were assholes too. You didn't choose to be queued with guys rolling in epics and legendaries, yet they votekicked you as if you did. Furthermore, it's not unusual at all for a tank to outdps the dps on certain pulls/AoE-heavy pulls. Especially if that guy has a large gear margin on you. Tanks with high item levels will tend to do more damage in general simply for that reason, and that helps them keep up threat with other similarly geared dpiss.

I mean, think about it anon. Any tank will have lots of AoE damage for AoE pulls. They're hitting a bunch of monsters at once, and if they're making larger pulls they'll be destroying the damage/dps meters. A truer measure of your dps would be a boss fight, not trash pulls.
That said, I want to say tanks have always had high damage outputs assuming they have the upper tiers of gear. Like, legendaries and shit? You bet that guy will be pulling decent numbers.

Ah okay, I definitely can't speak for vanilla/BC because I a) didn't tank then and b) didn't know how to play. I only really got into the game in Wrath, and past that point I think tanks definitely got capabilities for higher damage.

I like to do this test when people are raging at me. Usually I'm completely quiet but if someone on my team starts very vocally complaining about any individual teammate I just tell them "I disagree" then go back to being silent. I swear to christ around 50% of people will continue to fly off the handle for the remainder of the game and scapegoat the fuck out of me or any other players involved.
