That depends.
It's pretty much trial and error: the game. It takes trial and error to a comical extreme, because every time you protect yourself against one death you get something else killing you. If you want to win you have to bang your head against game overs until you've figured them all out and know what to prepare for in what order.
All the ways the game fucks you is both the source of entertainment and frustration.
So you protect this girl for 40 days. Seems easy enough.

I think it actually has a fucking ridiculous number of endings. Many of which are positive. It's just really hard to intuitively know how to get to the good endings.
For example, I think that if you refuse to help the magical lesbian who was fucking your mom, it makes Elodie angry and then she can kick the snake away which makes it possible to enlist your friend as a magical lesbian soldier later on.
You then go back and release your mom's girlfriend from prison, so being initially immature about things is the only way to reach the penultimate ending where you blow up a kraken or something.
How would you know that? Well, either trial and error over, and over, and over, or you just don't fucking know that.

The music ending is probably the best ending in the game in that you manage to avoid almost every bad thing that can possibly happen (peasant revolt, civil war), get the opposing nation to fuck off forever, and turn your kingdom into a cultural paradise. There's a reason the ending is called "Angel of Music".

I still don't know what does & doesn't trigger foreseeing the foreign tariffs and preparing for it ahead of time.

I ended up using a guide because I wanted to see more of the story, the writing was quite good.
I remember one event where a young female noble is flirting with your father and you have the option to step in and try to embarrass her to get her to leave. If your court manners are too low you end up looking like an idiot, but if you are able to pass the check she leaves and your father says we need heirs to advance our family but if you want to leave that obligation to yourself then so be it. I thought that was kinda cool, how he treats you like a child if you fail the check but if you pass it he treats you as his superior.

you can also convince him to duel with polearms instead of swords if your polearm skill is above 40, you need 75 polearms to beat him but even if you lose if you have 60 public speeking you can talk him down from killing you after he won the duel.
Also if you have falconry 70 (I believe) your falcon comes in and pecks his eyes out before he delivers the killing blow. Literally the only thing that useless fucking bird does in the whole game other than hunt.

if you have high enough espionage you'll get tipped off early that an invasion is imminent and you can start a major shipbuilding program. If you have a high enough military and public speaking skill you can convince your father to allow you to lead the fleet personally. You need to have a decent climbing skill which lets you climb into the crow's nest and see the order of battle to give the right orders to your captains. During the battle your ship is hit and sinks so you need to swim to a nearby one, if your swimming skill isn't high enough you drown. If you had 100 naval you win a decisive victory at sea and what's left of the enemy armada withdraws ending the immediate threat of invasion.
