I beat it about a year ago.
Taris, the first planet, is pretty boring. Try to get through it as best as you can and go with whatever build you find most interesting. I built for blasters and it didn't have much of an impact later on in the game.
It really picks up after Taris and you'll be glad you bought it. Also, it really tests your sense of morality at times. Choose dark side dialogue options.
