What are some good JRPGs on steam? Or any RPG really. I want to sink my teeth into something. I bought the X-com complete pack, should I install the long war before starting?

wasteland 2, pillars of eternity, shadowrun returns, dragonfall and hong kong all have good reviews.
As for jrpgs theres nothing on pc that hasnt already been on a console but the ys games are fun as fuck.

I would say Oath in Felghana. It's the third game in the series, but 1/2 are a bit too archaic. Only play once you got really into the series. However, Origins would be just as good of a starting point.

Nah, the stories aren't important in the game. It's more about the gameplay. And even so, I can prepare you for Oath by saying:
You play as Adol Christin, the most big dicked adventurer there ever was, who slays gods for breakfast and gets girls every adventure even though he doesn't care about them (his true love is adventure).
Your friend is Dogi. He broke you out of an enemy's jail by breaking down the wall, and he's been your best bro since.

I just blew my load on FFXIII, FFXIII-2, Tales of Zestria, and FF Type-0. Not going to recommend the FF titles since I'm just a fanboy, but the Tales games are great JRPGs. Tales of Symphonia isn't available on steam just yet, but it's a great one and you could always emulate it.

If you want story heavy RPG with deep story and gameplay; talking about sheets of effects, stats and inventory. Then I HIGHLY recommend Divinity Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity. Both are 9/10 games. Avoid Shadowrun Dragonfall and Hong Kong, they kinda suck.
If you want action RPGs that are easier to play; I suggest Final Fantasy 13-2 (7/10), Lightning's Return (7/10), Tales of Zestria (7/10), Grandia 2 (10/10) if you haven't tried it, The Last Remnant (9/10), Recettear An Item Shop's Tale (9/10), and finally Valkyria's Chronicles (9/10). All of these games are great, with light RPG mechanics and easy enough stories that intrques but aren't neccesiarly amazing.
Stick with the mentioned Wrpg's if you want to read pages and pages of skill texts and character planning sheets. The second row if you want pick up and play Jrpg's, that don't require tons of commitment.

You play as a CPU (a goddess in the world of Nep Nep). However, wacky shit happens sometimes, and being one of the goddesses, nep nep (reluctantly) has to do some shit.
First game - Other goddesses attack neptune, make her lose her memory
Second game - Goddesses are captured, younger sisters need to help out
Third game - Never played it
It's a turn based rpg, but every attack is an AOE attack, so you need to mess with your character's placement and the placement of hitboxes. But that's about as deep as it gets. Pretty boring, but servicable.
Probably the most interesting part is the writing. There are many references to video games, some blatant but some pretty subtle. Sometimes it can be pretty funny. Pretty much everything is a reference to something.
Pretty meh, would never get them unless they were on sale.

Did you not like the game or my harsh rating of it? I rate harshly and 10/10 games are perfect games, that don't exist. Did you not like it? Even if you didn't, you have to at least admit all the things that make it memorable. I can count the turn based, class based, grid based, FPS games out there on one finger. Those features alone set it apart from the rest, and it's actually a good game to boot.

The story is Ace Combat tier and that's actually a fucking awful thing (take real world events, twist them until they become unbelievably one sided, change the map and names, add a few elements for flavor).
The game itself is a gold nugget covered in shit. The good mechanics are there, but really retarded balance choices make the game unchallenging.
All in all a 7/10 at best, and only because of its aesthetics.

I would need pages of text and 30 minutes just to explain it.
I'll go over the basics very briefly.
You control a dude. The dude gets an army. You get many dudges, too many dudes in fact and you group them up to act like a single character in other RPGs.
So your Unit can have 5 people in it and you have 4 units to control. Since each Unit is composed of a group of people, you don't directly tell them to Atk, Dfnd or Heal like in other RPGs. You merely strongly suggest what they should do, and then the Unit commanded will take an action ability from a pool of abilities composed of each person in that unit.
So if you want a healing Unit, put all the healers capable of casting heals into that Unit. If you want Ranged atks, put all your ranged dudes into a Ranged Unit. Think of it like a war, where each Unit is a division, and each dude(s) inside that division have skills that are put into a pool to draw from.
Read the wiki, this is just the surface.
