It is really good. Somewhat short, but pretty amazing.
I wish more games openly let you mix in your own music with their soundtrack.
i just bought it, 50 minutes of game time, i can fairly say its a "go there, do this, come back" game, sometimes there is a distress call but until you have a really good ship you should just ignore. but wait more opinions im actually interested too

Getting a really good ship is a trap. Get the best upgrades/turrets/broadsides you can get before changing ships. Difficulty goes up dramatically with bigger ships, but your firepower and defense don't also do so necessarily.

Rebel galaxy is action/arcadey, X3 is sim/spreadsheety, so it depends on what you prefer. Blowing the shit out of merchants/pirates/militia or compiling a database of optimal trades and designing hundred-hours-to-build complexes.
I just want a space sim where I can fly to a space station and fuck aliens.

Not entirely. There are escort missions which are go here, warp with this guy there and blow up anything that dares shoot at him.
There's also data drop missions which are literally go there pick up cargo, evade ambush, go back.
There's also go there, wreck these people, don't have to go back. There's also mining or just wrecking people and a little bit of trading.
And the soundtrack is basically worth getting the game for anyway. If you don't get the game, just look online somewhere and give it a listen.
Oh to be clear, Rebel Galaxy is not a space sim. Not in the least. There's not even real 3D flight because of how the combat is set up. If you need 6dof, you're not getting it here.

upgrades are what's more important, ship is more about preferred playstyle than anything else
