There are a surprising number of Metroidvanias on Steam
What are the good ones?
Fallout 4
Undertale.
Aquaria is one.
None of them.
They're all inspired but something always feels off about them.
I recently tried La Mulana, and fuck me this shit is impossible.
Definitely avoid that one unless you're very good at puzzles/sorting cryptic shit. If you're an idiot like I am, you'll only frustrate yourself.

La Mulana isn't a metroidvania, really. It's its own thing: Frustration Simulator.
Fromsoft games wish they could be this brutal.
Only Cave Story+.
Valdis story
>>321113318
It's not though.
Axiom Verge is the closest thing to a metroid game you'll get.
Castle in the Darkness sucks ass and has no substance, avoid it at all costs.
La-Mulana is the best.
THIS THIS THIS
Hands down one of the best games I've played this year, easily top 3.

>Phil trying this hard
no.
>>321113338
Seconding this, also Ori and the blind forest
How's Somewhere Out There?
>>321115056
huh?
>>321114309
This game is pretty linear compared to traditional MetroidVanias, but it's still essential if you haven't played it.
guacamelee
literally the only problem its full of memes but im pretty sure the latest edition removed someof that shit
also ori is pretty good
>>321115118
It's not a metroidvania, just a puzzle/action game
Is it for sale at 20 cents again? get it for 90 minutes of fun then
>>321115245
This.
If you learn to grit your teeth and ignore the dank maymays, the game's pretty good.
Castle in the Darkness
Is Castle in the Darkness any good?
>>321115506
>>321115512
I'm looking at Guacamelee, what the fuck is with the different versions? The turbo version sounds like an upgraded version of the regular game but then they sell you a bundle with both?
>>321115506
>>321115697
Copy that
>>321113338
Boring as fuck.
And I tried really hard to like it.
>>321115004
I've had this in my wishlist for a while, and the sale price ain't half bad. I do wonder how demanding the game can be.
My computer is the kinda stuff that slows down to a crawl when playing Fairy Bloom Freesia levels of stuff.
>>321115004
Combat was kinda bad.
It also sucks how there are no teleporters to diminish the huge amount of backtraking in the game.
I liked Castlevania Mirror of Fate a bit. If it's sub-$5 I'd recommend it.
Dust is pretty good.
Magicians & Looters looks kinda ugly but it's a fun game.
Guacamelee was mentioned already, seconding it.
Strider is pretty fucking good.
That's all I can think of right now.
>>321113725
>>321113893
I have been playing that game on and of for months.
I know I could just look up a guide and beat it, but I don't want to give in. I don't want to lose.
Valdis Story was mostly good.
>>321115004
WHEN THE FUCK IS THE EXPANSION
>>321113047
Luigi's Chinese Cowboy impression was SO AWFUL.....

Environmental station alpha is decent. The music is great. I just wish there was more variety with the combat. The laser you get has a shit range and I'm over halfway though the game and I've only gotten a charge beam upgrade for it.
>>321115512
Yes, I'd recommend Castle in the Darkness.
>>321113047
axiom verge
>>321117190
Playing La Mulana without a guide is like HIV, anon.
It's not a fight you can win, but somehow, everyone always thinks they can.
>>321113557
Pretty much this.
I've played/tried most if not all Metroidvanias available on steam.
Dust is average, Ori is good, Valdis Story is the one that gets in my top, but the game lacks content really hard.
Good things some promissing Metroidvanias are coming in 2016
>ctrl f environmental station alpha

Not surprised /v/ doesn't know about it, but it's definitely a hidden gem.
-amazing soundtrack
-8 bit graphics that look amazing
it's fucking fantastic and if you're a fan of metroidvania's you love it.
