I want to get into the witcher series so badly. 2 and 3 look amazing but I just can't get into 1. Is it worth forcing myself through or can I just read a summary and move to 2?

When will 3 get a GOTY edition with all the DLC? I'm waiting for the full experience. I think right now with the season pass it's around $40 on steam.

1 is just not for everyone due to the combat system which is maybe not shit but rather weird, whereas having a really great atmosphere and a solid story. The engine sucks ass though.

If you care for the story and want a full experience, you should pull through.
It has a shitty start, but you can get used to it pretty fast (play is at a rhythm game) and just endure.
W2 is more mainstream and the story has nothing to do with W1, at that point you might even feel that W1 was a waste, but believe me, everything adds up in 3 and you will meet characters from all over the place.
Of course, if you're a diehard faggot, you can also read the books and completely ruin the experience for you. Most bookfags seem to dislike W3
Same had happened with me - I couldn't get into part 1. Then I started forcing myself to play it - and then it grew on me. I couldn't put it down.
Finish part 1 before going to part 2 - well worth it - the series will make more sense and you'll play the next games better in terms of combat.

If you want to speed through 1 max out the fireball spell and make potions that let you spam it, you get the recipe like in the first hour if you don't actually start with it.
In two max the trap spell and just whale on people/monsters. Once again the potion that lets you spam magic, you start with it.
I haven't played 3 but I'm sure one of the spells breaks the game.

I recently started 1, and am enjoying it so far.
The last bits of chapter 2 are where the game actually begins.
